@hellobeeboston: The ped listened to his lungs and they were fine. DS had some nasal congestion along with the cough that was rough for about 5 days (he wouldn't sleep by himself and woke up every hour or so), then gradually got better over the next week or so. He's fine now.

If you took him to the doctor this morning and he listened to your LOs lungs, it sounds like you are okay. Unfortunately there isn't too much we can do for our LOs when they are sick besides nasal spray, cool mist and lots of TLC.

It's so unsettling when our LOs are sick. Luckily, most of the time it's worse for us to see them sick than it is for them to be sick :) We use a lot of Vick's BabyRub when our LO is sick. It smells awesome and helps her breathe better. Putting it on their feet helps with coughs.

ETA: A humidifier or sitting in a steamy bathroom several times a day also helps.

Forgot to add, what we did practically to help DS at night was to raise up the head end of his mattress by putting a towel underneath. We also make sure the air isn't too dry in the bed room and that it isn't too hot.

For clearing the nose we've used saline drops which work ok.

Obviously, if you're worried, contact your doctor right away. I'm not a medical professional but I'll tell you our experience.

Our DS has a bit of a cough at times, he also sneezes a couple of times a day, and sometimes makes these gagging sounds like he's trying to cough up some goo. Since he's so little he can't blow his nose to get rid of the mucus so instead he needs to cough to get it out and that's where the gagging comes in. I keep an eye on him but as long as he's not choking I leave him be.

The first time DS had a blocked nose we were up half the night, DH and I were a little scared and not sure how to help DS and DS didn't really know what was going on, he just knew he couldn't breathe as normal. Since then DS has had a stuffy nose a couple of times and now we all deal with it a lot better, DS still wakes up more often (wakes himself up snorting) but usually goes back to sleep fairly easily.

Obviously if DS seemed unwell, coughed a lot, had a temperature or showed any kind of worrying signs, I'd be calling my doctor's office in a snap but otherwise I think stuffy noses and colds are part of life!

...or scare me into calling the ped in the morning. DS developed a cough last night. He coughed up some clear stuff when DH was holding him. I stayed with him all night. He woke up every hour to hour and a half gulping and coughing. I brought him up and walked around with him. He would get to the point of almost spitting something out, then swallowing it again. After a few minutes, he would fall asleep again.
This morning DS had his two-month check-up and vaccinations. The ped listened to his lungs as part of his normal check and said they sounded fine. He said we shouldn't be worried about the cough, and any number of things could be irritating or stuck in his throat.

Basically, any and every symptom could be explained away as nothing to worry about:
Coughing - acid reflux (diagnosed at 1 month), he recently started drooling a little, gripe water and vaccine given by syringe, coughing/choking on breastmilk from breast and/or bottle
Fever - don't think he has one, but if he does it could be from the vaccinations
Fussiness - from the vaccinations or gas/reflux
DH thinks he's "getting sick." It's possible DS and I got a cold over the weekend. I've got a little bit of a sore throat and headache. BFing will help him fight it if that's the problem.
He's not coughing constantly, his breathing isn't labored (just noisy during his coughing spells), and he didn't cough during the day. I've read that coughs often get worse at night.

In summation: clear lungs, inconsistent cough. I'll keep an eye on it in case it gets worse, but I'm keeping calm for now... right?
