@yellowbird: I think if you can keep it casual and just keep offering then it will at least give your LO an opportunity to practice :-)

I'm definitely feeling better that other babies have had the same issue. I am wondering if it's anything to do with his reflux or just a super strong gag reflex. He has a great pincer grasp and I thought that was the sign he's ready but maybe his gag reflex is just too strong

My LO was the same way. She really didn't get into solids (other than purées with no chunks) until after a year. I remember she put a cheerio in her mouth at her first birthday party and immediately threw up. It's super frustrating but I just kept offering and eventually she was able to tolerate them and now at 2 years old eats normally.

For some kids it just takes longer to get over the gag reflex, at 9 months I don't think I'd be too concerned yet. My friend's son was this way and would gag/throw up on even a little crumb of a puff. He eventually outgrew it and eats completely normal now.

My son had problems with thicker purees and the textured ones, and after a long process, he's been diagnosed with some sensory issues. He's almost 3 now.

Hopefully, that's not the case for you. Like the other ladies said, just take it slow and in his own time. He'll get there!

My son had issues taking a bottle (I think due to the reflux on his tongue) and then also had the same issue with solids. If any food sat on his tongue he would gag and throw up. We just had to go really slow and wait of him to learn how to move the food around.

I don't know how relevant this is for you, but I have heard that with some kids it can be a texture thing and getting them to play with different substances can improve their approach to food. Like, letting them play in mud, sand, with wet noodles, etc.

I would discuss with Ped but my son also had (has) a strong gag reflex and solids were a looooong slow road. He didnt like any homemade purées because they were too thick. So we just slowly introduced. Then lots of mushy foods like tofu. By a little over 1 he was getting the hang of it.

My LO didn't start tolerating chunky purees until 10 months. I do think it warrants discussing with your ped, but at 9 months he might just not be ready yet.

Yes! Everything you described above. I think C and P are cut from the same cloth :) Also asking about it at the ped next week.

I tried chunkier pieces of avocado again a couple nights ago and she started gagging right when I put it in her mouth. She has been great with purées though.

My daughter was that way. It just took longer but we did eventually get there! We were on purees longer than most.

@Kemma: I have no idea! I've never looked back there but I will try. My daughter actually has huge tonsils so it's possible.

Does he have enlarged tonsils or adenoids? My nephew really struggled with food until he had his tonsils and adenoids removed because he simply couldn't swallow them!

My son is almost 9 months old. We started purees at 6 months but he pretty much refused them. We could never even get him to open his mouth. In the last three weeks he's finally started gobbling them down and doing great. He likes them to be runny.

I have been giving him pieces of food and thicker purees but even if the smallest bite of something gets on his tongue that is thicker and not super runny he starts gagging and vomits. He basically can't tolerate anything with substance at all.

Did anyone else deal with something like this? I'm going to bring it up at his well visit in two weeks, but in the meantime I'm wondering if others have any experience. My daughter was eating basically everything we did by this time so it seems off to me, but maybe not?
