How frequent is your baby pooping? When we had a bout of diahrreah, it was very frequent.

@Alivoo01: it is normal that an EBF baby could go up to 10 days (but I have heard of 21 days) without having a BM. The composition of your BM changes with what your baby needs plus it is easily absorbed and contains all the nutrients your baby needs. Being so packed with nutrition leaves little to nothing as "waste" so it may take a few days for some to build up in the intestine. Plus the intestine and gut bacteria are still forming. You are doing great EBF 4.5 months!

@Ms.SK: DS is EBF and I haven't changed my diet. However, I eat everything.

@Fronkinzankinsbride: His poops smells horrendous! Definitely sour smelling, but they've always smelled bad. What happened to EBF babies poo not smelling?! haha!

@erwoo: His poop does remain on top of the diaper vs being soaked in.

@edelweiss: @Mrs. Blue: @Adira: @sarbear: Trying to get a better benchmark...., but DS will go and it's contained in his diaper, but once I lay him down to change him, it goes out of his diaper and up his back. Sometimes, when he's going, he overfills his diaper, and it just goes straight up his entire back. It's still mustard yellow color though and I don't really see clumps. Maybe some "seeds", but no clumps.

If you open his diaper and most of his poop has adsorbed into the the diaper rather than being on top. I would definitely talk to his ped about it to make sure; but it sounds like he's just having massive diapers from not going every day. And at that age poop is still pretty loose from BM or formula. You will notice his poop becoming more solid once he starts solids. And then you "will" know if he has diarrhea.

You'll know it when you see it! DS had a really bad few days if diarrhea when he was 8 months from antibiotics, it was mainly liquid.

Agree with what the others have said! Diarrhea is definitely very liquidy (when Xander had it, it almost always leaked out of his diaper - gross!) with maybe some small clumps. You'll know it when you see it!

ETA: Around that age, Xander was only going every 3-4 days and when he went it, it was ALWAYS a mess!! Totally normal!!! :)

Someone told us early on when we asked this question, that if you have to ask, you haven't seen it yet. I would say that this was true for us; when we had our first round, we knew it was different. It happens more often than once a day when they have diarrhea and it will mostly look like brown liquid soaked into the diaper with maybe a few small clumps.

the couple of times LO had diarrhea, it was like @hilsy85: said--mostly liquid, and not like his other poops at all.

Since he isn't on solids yet it should be very loose - but if he had diarrhea I think you would know - it would def be more watery and appear different than a "normal" poop

I think this is one of those things that you're not sure until you see it and then you know without question. Diarrhea is watery and like described by @hilsy85 sort of separated. It may also smell different than usual, more pungent/sour. It never hurts to call and ask the doctor though especially if there is a sudden change.

What does your baby eat? It is normal for breastfed babies to never have a sold BM. It would be worrisome if they did. Have you changed anything in his diet?

Lo has had 1 diarrhea diaper and I could definitely tell--it was prety much just liquid with a few small clumps (sorry, gross!). I think you will definitely be able to tell--if it's pasty, that doesn't sound like diarrhea to me, especially if he's acting normally. But if you're concerned, I would call the pedi just to be safe!

How can you tell if a baby has diarrhea since baby poop is soft as is?

DS is 4.5 months old. DS doesn't go daily (he'll go within 48-72 hours usually), but when he does go it's large and explosive. It looks kind of pasty and somewhat wet. He's having plenty of wet diapers, eating well, and is his normal behavior. Just wondering if I should contact the pedi and bring in his diaper for examination or not.
