Around 7-8 months b/c she hated the infant seat and we were annoyed with it too.

We switched Xander around 10 months, but switched Logan around 8 months because he's heavier and it was getting hard to lug the infant car seat around.

We switched at 4 months. We had just done a vacation in FL where did a lot of driving around, and DS just screamed and screamed everywhere we went. I had to sit in the back with him the entire time and try to keep him calm and give him his paci. We decided to try the convertibles when we got back, and it did make things much better.

We switched when he was approaching the 1" mark from the top of the car seat so close to 12 months?

I switched at 6 months, because we were getting ready for a cross country move and I thought a convertible might be more comfortable than the infant seat. DS just now out grew the infant seat at 13 months (he's on the small side, too).
The infant seat does seem so much easier to deal with for winter, though - so it makes sense to wait until after winter.

We switched around 11 months, and then it was because we bought the convertible and had nowhere to store it besides installed in the car!

C was also pretty small so she didn't outgrow the seat, though she was getting close, which is why we bought the convertible when we did. She did start getting heavy to carry around so I started leaving the infant seat in the car more and only taking it out when she had fallen asleep in the car, or when I wanted to have a place to put her at our destination. I wasn't in a big rush to switch since I had more options and she was happy. She was a summer baby so I didn't have the cold part to worry about by I agree with your reasoning that it's better to bundle it up inside and not be carrying a squirmy baby on the ice.

When did you choose to switch your child? LO is 7 months old but a little peanut so I'm hoping to keep her in the infant carrier until after winter so I can easily carry her in and out of places. The weight isn't getting to me yet and I figure it's safer for me to carry her in the seat with ice/snow than it is a squirmy baby. What about you if you used an infant seat when did you switch?
