DS had a worrisome case at 13 months all due to antibiotics which it sounds like isn’t your issue. He had been on antibiotics for 8 days for an ear infection and the ped chalked it up to that. To complete the full 10 days of antibiotics, the ped prescribed a different one for the last two days. I took him back to daycare since he was acting normally.</p> <p>By the next morning, the hives got 10x worse and we went back to the ped who had us admitted just to rule out an extremely rare and harmful case of hives that can be internal. (Basically in mouth, nose, bottom, making it hard to nurse, etc.) It wasn’t that in the end. The ped didn’t know why things went from bad to worse. These kinds of reactions are so bizarre and hard to figure out even for peds and even when you narrow it down to just one category of thing. It could have just been the first antibiotic building up in his system and/or it could have been the second one. It was dramatic, in any case! The doctors and nurses kept calling it “impressive”!!</p> <p>Like PP said, hives can change rapidly. That’s partly how you know they’re hives. The first day it was just a splotch here and there. After a small dose of Zyrtec prescribed by the ped, the hives somewhat subsided but rebounded overwhelmingly the next day. What helped me keep track of the changes were taking photos every 6 hours or so, like you’re doing. </p> <p>Echoing others, I would not hesitate taking your LO to the ped if you don’t like how it’s looking tomorrow morning. Hope it’s all but gone and you don’t have to worry about it.</p> <p>ETA: Through our whole ordeal, DS kept nursing and playing and acting himself so I knew he was fine. I'll wall you a picture of his face I took once after he woke up from a nap--went down totally normal, 2 hours later half his face and body was in welts. it scared the crap out of me, he'd had walnuts in a cookie I made for the first time and we got him nut tested etc etc.... it was all just from random colds and viruses. </p> <p>Like @Ina85: said, this doesn't look like Roseola (we had that too)--it is more tiny chicken-pox-y bumps, but the rash doesn't show up until after the fever and contagion period is over. And my daughter just had roseola last month and the rash does not look like that- it's small red bumps all over baby's trunk, not bigger splotches like the hives rash. My Lo2 had a fever around that age and then developed a rash on his body. We didn’t go to doctor but a doctor friend at church saw him and said it was roseola. By the time you see the rash, there’s nothing you can really do. It looks like hives to me. My lo gets them when he has a persistent cold. Based on the description the triage nurse at the ped's office refused to get him in for an appointment and said it sounded like something had irritated his skin and to see if it got better by the end of the week. Fortunately he can go back to daycare as the nurse sent a note that it wasn't contagious, but I'm kind of at a loss though for what caused it and what if anything to do to make him more comfortable. I'm not sure if I should be worried about it being something in my diet (he's breastfed) versus something he came into contact with, or investigating both...
