@CatchAFallingStar: that's great that she's enjoying it now :) how long did it take for her to begin liking it?

@LCTBQE: That's why I signed my son up, because he loved bath time. So I thought that meant he'd love a larger pool, but that wasn't the case. I think it's a great idea to try it out during family swim a couple of times to see.

@LCTBQE: yes! My daughter started around 7 or 8 months.. She hated it at first but now she's 2 and absolutely loves it! And, she's far more comfortable in the water than the other toddlers in her class. I think it's great for them!

@LCTBQE: holy bejuss... I'd be hesitant to sign up then too!

I'd try the open pool first to see if he likes it or not and go from there. I will say my LO loves bath time too so it sounds like yours might like swim time.

@looch: @sunny: hm, maybe I'll try going to the family swim hour before I sign up just to make sure he doesn't hate the pool. he LOVES bath time, he splashes like crazy and is always laughing, it's his favorite thing--but it's warm and small and not overwhelming or loud.

@RKitty: ahaha, $30/ PER CLASS. everything in NYC is a ripoff, including the Y :meh: they're 30 minutes long. it is ridiculous, but I didn't rule it out since that's the same money I used to spend on brunch every Saturday back when I used to leave the house. the hot tub part sounds nice :)
@Mrs. Pen: Cool, glad to hear you liked it! I never realized anyone could learn to swim before the age of 4 or so, anyway-- modern times, huh?

We did the baby swim classes at the y starting st six months with my first! We had fun :) yeah, he didn't learn to swim by a year old but he became super comfortable in the water and it gave us something to do :) I recommend it!

@LCTBQE: $30 for 8 classes? I'd sign up for all of them! LOL The ones I can find here for in the winter are $80 for 8 classes! And class is only 20 minutes long!

In regards to the cold I'd say about half of our class is shivering by the end of it, even with shirts on. My little dude is a rolly polly though and has never shivered, though I can tell he has started to get cold towards the end of a couple of classes. But our class always ends up in the hot tub for our good bye song and they all settle down. (The tub temp is lowered and the bubbles are off during class time)

@LCTBQE: This was when my son was 6 months old! He literally had his arms around my neck the entire time! It was clear then that swimming wasn't his thing, which kills me since I am a water baby to this day.

I think you try it and see, lol.

Thanks for the thoughts, everyone!

@sauerkraut: teaching sounds so fun! yes, my friend who belongs to our Y told me the pool is kind of cold, that was one of the reasons I was thinking of waiting until he's a bit bigger, but the swim shirt is a better idea than assuming his baby metabolism will be in *that* much better shape at 9 months (duh, what was I thinking..)

@winniebee: @looch: @PinkElephant: yes, looking for a time killer as we never. leave. the house. and I thought it might be stimulating and fun. and right now he's pretty easy to deal with since he's so little, not sure how crazy or hard to handle he'll be when he's a toddler like yalls kiddos :) maybe it's like taking them out to restaurants or on airplanes--git while the gittin's good kind of thing?

@KayKay: @RKitty: @raspberries: @elljay: thanks for letting me know how your little little babies did! it does sound fun, and that's about what I expected re: not "learning" anything and having it be more of a social/fun/new experiences activity. the drawbacks sound annoying but maybe not deal breakers. good point about the foundation for older swim lessons--didn't occur to me.

and yes @RKitty 1) it's one of the only things I've found that I can do with the baby schedule-wise (I work, too) and 2) forgot to complain about in my original post DAMN that shit is expensive! our Y charges $30/class for an 8-session package. when I was single and saw parents coming in and out of the locker room I always assumed they were free classes, like spin. I won't even spend that much on a yoga class for myself. but I think I'm going to try it and see how we like it :)

We're doing one right now and my LO is 7 months old. I really enjoy and so does he (as far as I can tell) once he gets into the water he starts splashing and kicking like crazy and he'll even start before we get into the water. We don't really learn anything but it gets him used to being in the water and teaches him how to float on his back. But like others say it's mostly singing songs and playing with your baby at this age. But it does make a good foundation for older swim classes.

I probably won't do it every session (so every weekend) because you sign up for 7-8 week long sessions and it's kind of expensive for as little as he gets out of it. But as long as he continues to enjoy it I plan to sign up for every other session.

I also enjoy it because as full time working mom it's one of the very few mom/baby classes that we can go too!

If I were you, I'd just take him for some open swim sessions to start getting him comfortable in the water. We tried to do lessons with DD1 around 22 months, and even then, I don't think she was interested in doing much other than flopping around. She definitely didn't want the instructor to hold/help her, so it was just me or her dad trying to drag her around to do the "skills" when really she just wanted to splash and play with toys. We could have saved a lot of $$$!!!

I will caveat that with - it might be more fun with a baby as young as your DS - I imagine at 5 months he'll be a lot easier to manage, so you might actually get to socialize bit with other parents!

We did swim classes starting at 6 months, and it wasn't really useful for the baby - he was just too young to understand what was going on. BUT it was fun for me as the parent - it's a good way to meet other people with babies near the same age as yours, and it was a good introduction to water. He started to get really into it around 10 or 11 months, I'd say, and would squeal with excitement when going into the pool.

I can't answer for a 6mo old, but I have taken DD since she was about 12 mos (20 mos now) & I think it has been fun & worth it. She's getting better about moving her arms & doing flutter kicks, but to me the most valuable things she's gotten out of it is being able to pull herself out onto the side of the pool, getting used to going underwater, and getting a feel for floating around wearing different types of floatation vests occasionally. Like @elljay: said, we have similar drawbacks, but I've still felt it was worth doing as an activity.

@looch: lol I know. The problem is big brother has lessons and he wouldn't understand also not getting a lesson so I suffer through. He is a maniac in the water, wants no help, tries to do it all on his own! Can't wait until he is old enough to do it alone!

We did a class at the Y when DS was right around six months. It was good to start getting him used to the water - we took a couple vacations to the lake/beach later that summer and he was great in the water, so the class may have helped with that. He also would always take epic naps afterwards, so that was nice.

The drawbacks were 1) there's no real focus on teaching them anything besides maybe how to kick. It's pretty much just parent-kid time in the water with songs. Also, our class had kids from 6 mos to 3 years, so he would've ended up being in the same class for a really long time. It sounds like that's not the case at your Y, though. Also, 2) we went on Saturday mornings and our Y was always PACKED. All the swim classes seemed to change over at one time, so it was nearly impossible to dry/dress both him and myself in the throng of kids and parents in the locker room. I would end up leaving the class 5 mins early just to avoid the rush, and even then it was difficult to manage getting both of us changed since he couldn't stand or walk.

I used to teach these classes - I think they're good for getting babies used to the pool, which gives them a leg up for learning to swim, especially if you keep up with the classes. Plus they're fun! The one thing I'd say is that sometimes the really little ones can get really cold in the pool, so maybe visit and get a sense of the water temp or get one of those swim/sun shirts for an extra layer.

We did it last year at 12m. I'd only do it if you are excited about getting in the water & singing songs! I don't think my LO got a ton out of it (mostly just bonding time, introduction to the water) that we couldn't have gotten on our own at the pool. So if you're looking for an excuse to go to the pool, or you're looking for some sort of class to go to with LO, it's great. But it's not particularly swimming-specific at that point :)

We didn't do it that young, but we did it with Logan at 18m and it was a lot of fun. And I think the earlier you start, the earlier they actually will learn to swim. Xander's almost 4 and can't swim, but there were 20m olds that could because they started so young.

Lite topic :) For years I've been seeing parents doing mommy/daddy-and-me baby swim class on Saturday morning at the Y. They have classes for 6-8 mo/old, 9-12 mo/old, and so on. My boo is 5 months now--wondering if I should sign up for the 6-8 class next month, or if we'd get more out of it if we waited a little bit. (I don't have some fantasy that my infant is going to actually learn how to swim, just thought it would be fun.)

Has anyone done swim class this young? Love to hear your opinion if you have one.
