I used to teach infant swimming classes and the babies and parents loved them! The babies all learned to get comfortable in the water, and I noticed as time went on that the toddler/kindergarten class kids who started with me as babies were much more confident and able swimmers than most of the ones who didn't. I think they are great :) We are looking forward to doing them with Baby Grizz.

I would like to do this, she loves bath time and I want her to be very comfortable in water. Our classes don't start until 6 months so we have another month yet.

@Mrs. Pen: what she said. Check to make sure the pool's heated and concern of chlorine exposure.

It's not so much "swimming" as exposing them to water really. THen eventually you move to dunking their head in the water etc.

We talked about it and since we have a inground pool and my husband swims like a fish we'll just teach her on our own.

We did one last year when DS was just over about 14 months. It was a lot of fun, but DS only warmed up to it at the very end (there was one dad that really scared him...he had long hair and would make faces at LO).

We want to do it again soon. DS LOVES to go into the pool now so I think he will get more out of it!

We started our session 4 weeks ago and LO seems to enjoy it. He's 8 months old and the session is 20 weeks long, so he will be 12 months it ends. We picked a pool that is specifically for younger children (no adult swim) - one of their biggest advantages is the clean, low chemical water. I also love our their locker room is set up - very baby friendly, lots of changing stations available.

It's pricey for the "lessons" (about $20 per class) but I can tell how much LO has learned in just a few weeks. He's definitely getting something out of it. Like this past week, he was instantly comfortable with floating on his back where as the previous weeks he was very hesitant. The instructor has also been trying to get him to cruise along on a platform they have in the water. My husband does the classes with him and it's cute watching them :)

A friend of mine told me that they took her son when he was 6 months old and that he learned how to flip around on his back and float. Is this something that they still teach?

Thanks, everyone! I'm totally sold, but the hubs doesn't see how it's any different than us going to my BIL's pool at his condo complex. I think I'm just going to pay for it myself and tell him to suck it, LOL.

We did a 6 week class for $45. It was really fun and a great way to do something with your LO (she was 6 months around the time, and it was great to have a planed class). Just remember that you may miss a class if she gets sick or something happens. We missed 2 classes, but i think it was worth it!

We've been going for the past year, we started when he was 8 weeks old. We get weekly half-hour lessons for $78 a month, so yours sounds like a great deal! We have a lot of fun and it's nice to hang out with parents and babies of similar ages. For us it is mainly about getting comfortable in the water and socialization since we don't do daycare.

Here is a link they have us go through when we start lessons, it has some interesting thoughts: http://www.hubbardswim.com/docs/PreparingBabiesforSwimLessons.pdf

We did it and had fun :)

It was $40 for 7 weeks, once a week. He was 6-8 months. It got him used to the water and playing a few games. The one downside was that the pool was terribly cold and after about 20 minutes we had to get out because DS was too cold. I wish they kept the pool warmer!!

Another concern I've read is early exposure to chlorine: it's a chemical that isn't good for babies... So we only did one set of classes and took a break. We might start up again this summer though :)

Have fun!!

@HabesBabe: I think it's never too young to get them started being comfortable in the water! I used to volunteer teach swim to little kids (but they were all toddler age in my class -IDK what the min. age was.) I know my BFF took her LO for classes last year (I think she just turned 1 when they started) and she LOVED it! After classes were over, they had to get a little blow-up pool for there yard for the rest of the summer and would come over to our community pool where the dad would just hold her around in the water. :)
I think at that age, all they do is just acclimate LOs to the water, teach them to blow bubbles if they can get comfortable enough with their face in, and splash around.

We signed up for a 4wk class when DD was 4mo (it started at 3mo). We only made one bc she ended up napping through the other 3. The one class that she did go to, she loved it. Now we just do open family swim at the Y, bc it's included in our membership. I think it's important to get LOs comfortable in the water, so if the class is affordable for you what's the harm?

So I was looking through our city's park & rec class schedule and saw that they offer Parent and Tot swim lessons for 6 mos-3 years to prep for swim classes. Of course, I'm not expecting C to do ANYTHING remotely close to swimming, but I thought it would be a cute thing for us to do once a week.

The session runs from the end of March until mid June, so C will be 8 mos-11 mos if we sign up for it. The hubs thinks it's completely ridiculous and too early for us to do it, and it would be a waste of money (12 classes, once a week, for $89).

Has anyone done infant swimming classes? I've seen soooo many cute videos on YouTube and that makes me want to do it even more! If you did take a class, was it through the city or a specific infant swimming program?
