The swim lessons I've looked into don't specifically mention ISR, now I'll be sire to ask if they know and teach the technique.

@jetsa: We are almost done with our 6 weeks and I'm glad we've done it. We'll actually end up at 6 weeks + a day. We got slowed down and back-tracked a bit by a nasty ear infection in week 3. But today he did summer clothes and tomorrow he goes in in a winter coat. It's not the best video, because he was really upset to be wearing clothes in the pool.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/CX3-uaEyyjQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I definitely plan to start DS2 sooner (I'll start him at 9 months. I'd start at 6, but that's the dead of winter and I don't want to deal with coming out of swim lessons into the snow.) I've been watching a couple babies with lessons before/after, and some older kids who did the float when they were little, and they seem much more comfortable in the water.

This thread gave me the kick in the pants I needed to get these scheduled for my 2.5 year-old. He'll start in September. I'm excited. I'll do them with DS2 when he is (at least) 6 months old. I'm a bit terrified of the time commitment, but excited to see how it goes. I'm sorry you don't have lessons in your area :(

My guy kind of hates the water, so I'm both 1) scared this is going to be excruciating for both of us and 2) hopeful he will start liking the water!

@jetsa: We did 7 weeks of ISR this summer and it's been great. He did regular swim lessons last year, and got no where. I loved the 5 days a week/10 minutes schedule for him, though it was a large time commitment for me. I know lots of people who have put their infants into the program and had little fish by the time they hit 2 years old. It was great for us!

That isn't offered where I live, otherwise I would absolutely have done it.

We are now doing lessons at a place called Aquatots- it's a franchise- and DD has learned so much only being in lessons for 2 months.

My sister did with all her kids and they are awesome swimmers. We didn't have the money to spend on it and don't have a pool so we did a different program. Otherwise we would have definitely done it.

@Bluebonnet: darn it. I was hoping we could travel up there but not for 10 mins a day. All the other programs I've seen are sing and dance put face in water programs nothing like this.

@jetsa: I had the same thought as @Jess1483: If the nearest location is 2 hours away, it may not be doable for you.

Lessons are a huge time and money investment (but so worth it). Lessons are 5 days a week, 10 minutes a lesson for 6-8 weeks. And you will likely need at least annual refresher lessons (for a week) unless you take weekly refresher lessons (I know many people that do this).

In our area, there are several swim programs that teach "rescue swim lessons" which are similar to ISR. Look into that option if ISR is too far for you.

Not doing a formal class (at least not yet - DD is only 10 weeks old). But since ~6 weeks old, I've been teaching her to get used to her head going under and floating on her back (can't do it without assistance yet, but as I said, she's only 10 weeks old).

@jetsa: The people I know who did it did 10 minute lessons every weekday for a number of weeks. Obviously that wouldn't work well for being 2 hours away. Hopefully there's another approach that will work.

@Bluebonnet: @Jess1483: good to hear! We'll have a walkable cover we'll use but accidents can still happen and this seems like the perfect stop gap to prevent it.

@Bluebonnet: how many classes is it? I emailed but no response yet. The closest lessons are 2 hours away

Yes. Both LOs have successfully completed ISR. It's an amazing program and I highly recommend it.

We bought a house with a pool. In addition to a pool fence, it was important to me for LOs to have survival swimming skills.
