I agree with media girl, I want my child to be able to walk before trying to swim.

I plan on starting swimming lessons with my LO when she is 6 months old, but not the self rescue kind. We have a pool in our neighborhood, and I want her to learn how to be comfortable around water as early as possible!

I think you mean infant self rescue? We plan to do it. I have a family friend who brought their 2 year old. It is a serious time commitment, as you have to go everyday for a period of time, but I don't want to even think about the consequences. I used to work at a pool club and there was a member whose sister's son was found face down in the pool at their grandparents home, he didn't know how to swim. Without going too much into detail, he was confined to a wheel chair and couldn't communicate.

I guess I just want to take every possible precaution because of how active our lifestyle is, and I'm just not comfortable with the idea of the chance. But I don't want to take the chance of creating a lasting fear, so I'm still very confused.

We're probably going to wait until we go visit my family next summer. My parents have a clean pool at home so we'll teach our LO how to swim then. I don't like the idea of public pools.

I think I'll wait until my child is old enough to walk to teach them to swim. We don't go out on boats or anything like that. Our parents both live by the beach but we'll be with them when we're at the beach. I LOVE going to the pool, the beach, etc so I want my child to learn to swim and to love to swim as much as I did. I'll probably give him/her lessons myself to start if I can remember the 5 years of swim lessons I taught in High School and College!

The smell of chlorine while I was pregnant made me feel nauseous. So when I had her I think chlorine kinda creeped me out. I think next summer I'll think she's sturdy enough but I really didnt want her ingesting chlorine water or have it on her skin for too long.

My daughter hated baths as an infant and is still not a big fan so I didn't do any infant swim classes because of that. From what I read, infant swim classes are meant to get them acclimated to water and not to actually teach them how to swim. We put her in the pool a few times and she screamed bloody murder so I didn't want to pay money for classes. But after she turned 1 we tried the pool again and she really loved it which totally shocked us. So I may look into lessons this upcoming summer when she is 2 as well.

I did swimming lessons with Mavi, but it wasn't the let go and see if the child learns to turn over by itself. Plus, I think i would of been terrified at that thought.

I will though take more courses now that he's older in case he drowns, what I must do as a parent to get him (not as easy as it seems)

I think if my baby didn't hate the water so much already I might try it, since I live in Florida and there's water everywhere. But she HATES bath time and is just beginning to tolerate it and not scream through the whole thing, so swim lessons would just be awful for everyone involved.

I obviously plan to keep a close eye on her when she begins to move around, and my parents just put a gate around their pool so that's one less thing to worry about. I have a friend who started swimming lessons at 2, so we'll probably go that route.

I think it just depends on the kid. All babies are different.

I've been looking into this concept lately of swim lessons for infants. The idea is just to teach them survival techniques to turn over, float, and get to the side of the pool/bathtub/pond if an accident were to happen and they fell into water.

I've watched a lot of videos and read about it, and it sounds like a great way to prevent infant and toddler drowning deaths, but I'm concerned about one thing.

This does NOT seem fun for many of the babies, which is ok, because this is about survival, not fun. But I'm just concerned that if I take a baby to a class like this they will feel that I'm torturing them and not understand why I'm putting them through this. I realize they likely won't remember this when they're older, but I'm concerned about mentally scaring them or creating a fear of water...

What do you think? Have any of you tried this technique with your babies and what were your results? Especially if your child is older now, did it make them more or less confident around water as an older child?
