@Nutella: hugs! I know how hard it is to balance the monetary and physical costs of further treatments with the desire for another child! Going in to treatments the second time I had firmly decided that we'd do six rounds with one round break in the middle, but when I was in the thick of it and getting negative tests it was so much more difficult to see things in black and white! It is interesting that your clinic doesn't use a trigger shot in your case, my clinic was very pushy in that sense, their regular protocol for ALL was clomid, trigger shot, and then progesterone patches, pills, AND suppositories. A bit of an overkill sometimes, but also a relief to have a structure in place.

I really liked that my doctor also talked to me after a failed cycle about what I wanted to do going forward, it gave us a chance to think about what did or didn't work and what might increase our chances for the next month. Have you been able to do something like that with your doctor?

@kayak: oh thanks for that! Yeah I guess it’s different for everybody. My cycles are regular & they don’t use triggers here if your LH surges enough naturally so it’s all a bit of a shot in the dark. I think I maaay give it one more go after this but also coming to terms that I don’t want to do more treatment. Feel like I’m just bleeding money with all the bills and acupuncture etc. Life!

@Nutella: unfortunately there wasn't one thing that we did that worked, but both myself and my doctor got a better sense of my body's timing the more cycles we tried - so the first two rounds my first time were just bad timing. Also my clinic's regular protocol was to do trigger shot at the same time as the IUI, but I preferred to do it the day before (as seems more common in North America).

Good luck! I hope it works for you!

@kayak: hello! Do you mind me asking what worked for you/what did you do differently on your successful IUI cycles? Trying for #3 and on our second cycle now and not sure how manu attempts we’ll do as it’s all out of pocket and generally difficult!! Thanks in advance

Good luck! You never know how these things will go - DS was IUI #5 on a last (in my mind pointless) attempt as we were waiting for our IVF consult. I’m currently 41 years old and 27 weeks with #2 that was IUI #3. I think that although I was older the second time around I knew it could work and we all had a better idea of what worked for my body. DS was just over two when I went back to my clinic and they never asked about nursing so I didn’t volunteer the information, just checked the medications they gave me with reputable lactation resources and made the decision to keep nursing throughout - until my supply disappeared and it got too painful early i. the second trimester.

Good luck! I have my fingers and toes crossed for you.

Also unexplained IF and needed 3 IUIs with DD1. Got pregnant after 4 or 5 cycles naturally, miscarried. Another 4 cycles, pregnant again naturally (literally as I went back to the RE) - go figure.

AF is here so I just reached out to the clinic. Everything is done by email right now so I'll have to wait for them to set up the appt...

I'm so jealous of those who have no issues getting pregnant. What I wouldn't give to get pregnant naturally. Not looking forward to all the testing. And this time we have to tell our parents because they are our childcare right now and we are working from home, we cant hide anything.

Not looking forward to the "are you pregnant yet???" Ugh.

@Fawn: thank you for your reply. I want to wish you luck with whatever your decision is! Unexplained infertility is such a double edge sword. On one hand, they cant find anything wrong so it should be possible to get pregnant naturally. But on the other hand, there is nothing to "fix".

@Umbreon: my kids are almost 5 years apart and I had to do the HSG again. My office said they do it again each time you are trying for a baby. As for the breastfeeding, they specifically asked if I was and they want you to wean if you are.

@Tionn3: thank you! That's good to know. I hated the test so much but if it means a baby I'd gladly do it.

Do you think it matters if I'm still breastfeeding? Only night and morning and my cycle is back and has been as regular as it was before. Not sure if they will care if I'm still breastfeeding or not.

I think you just never know what the second time around will be like. It took me 14 months to get pregnant the first time. we are debating #2, but I feel like it will be about the same.

As for the testing...I would actually get the HSG again even though your first one was normal. I was in an infertility support group where one of the participants didn't get an HSG for her secondary infertility work up because she had already had a successful pregnancy. It ended up being a big mistake because the birth of her first child caused her Fallopian tubes to become blocked (from trauma or scar tissue). She wasted a lot of money and time on useless IUIs because of that.

I agree with what others stated in that you never really know what each journey to pregnancy will be like, especially with unexplained infertility. There's definitely a chance you can get pregnant after a few more months of trying, or you may need some assistance again. You just never know.

I got pregnant pretty easily the first time, 4-5 months of trying. That pregnancy ended at 19 weeks, but everyone kept reassuring us that we would get pregnant quickly again. Well that didnt happen and after over a year of trying and 3 IUIs we did IVF and finally ended up with our daughter. We were considered unexplained since all our tests came back great.

We havent started trying for our next baby yet, though I'm unsure if we should try naturally for a bit or go straight to IVF again since we have 8 frozen embryos left and I feel guilty not using them.

If it were me I would probably call the fertility clinic now as well.

Best of luck!

agree with above that you really just never know when it will be easy or hard! I know so many who had it easier after the first time. on the other hand for us it took longer each time, but did not require more intervention, just number of cycles. hoping you get a very sticky BFP very soon!! I definitely wouldn't hesitate to call the RE and at least get the ball rolling. so much is just chance and the probability does go down a bit as you age, but you can still hit the "lucky" setup any month so don't give up even if it takes longer!

It's all so dependent on each individual. I got pregnant on my first IUI for my first (twins) and have been trying for 2+ years and done 4 IUIs, all unsuccessful, for #3. So many women don't even need fertility treatment the second+ time around and so many do and are successful and many others need treatment and are unsuccessful. I wish you the very best, easiest journey to pregnancy.

It took three IUI cycles for us to conceive our DD in 2015 and only 1 to conceive our DS in early 2019. I believe I was on clomid in 2015 and letrozole in 2019. I was also worried about being nearly 4 years older (37 vs 33), but an IUI still worked for us. I actually found out I was pregnant with DS the same day we were called to confirm our spot on an IVF wait list.

I did have to go through all the tests again when we were trying to conceive DS, and it was a little more challenging managing all the appointments while working and having another child, but we managed.

If you’re ready, I’m sure your doctor/clinic would be willing to to start the process again now even though it’s “only” been 4 months...we tried for #2 for awhile, too, and our clinic said we could have come to them right away based on our history.

I hope things work out for you and you’re able to have your second!!!

DH and I were diagnosed with unexplained infertility. We went through 3 rounds of IUI and finally got pregnant.

I was on letrozole before these IUIs and I think I had 3 follicles the cycle I conceived.

We are ready for baby 2, have been trying unsuccessfully for 4 months now. I'm 10 dpo, took a test and its negative. The first sign of AF I'm going to reach out to the clinic again.

I am soooo not looking forward to all the tests again. I'm hoping I wont need much more than blood tests (HSG was not fun..)

Those of you who needed an IUI to conceive your first, did it work for your second as well?

I got my BFP last time the day before our consult for IVF. I'm scared now that I'm almost 2 years older, IVF may be our only hope. I think my eggs are bad and the letrozole helped increase our chances of my ovulating with a good egg. Not sure that makes sense but its the only explanation I can think of as to what our problem is.
