I've been doing my research on tons of baby gear. One of these days I hope to find a bugaboo stroller or the stroll-air stroller for a steal, and when I do, I intend to snatch it up, pregnant or not. stuff like that never expires :-)

It's not superstition or anxiety, but a feeling of embarrassment that prevents me from buying anything....kind of like buying wedding magazines before you are engaged. Not the same thing, I know, but that's still how I feel. If I bought anything, I would end up hiding it. I wouldn't want anyone to see things I've bought and feel sorry for me b/c I'm not pregnant. I want to be able to buy these things in public while basically telling anyone who will listen, "I'm pregnant!"

With that said, I still look at baby items online all the time--mainly gear b/c I love researching that type of stuff. I have a secret Amazon wish list of baby items. I'll look on Craigslist and see these amazing deals and think, "I've got to buy that! It would be dumb not to!" I try to remind myself that there will be other great deals out there when the time is right. The last great deal I saw online (Bugaboo Bee w/accessories for $175!), I finally asked my husband if he thought we should start buying stuff to space out the cost of baby purchases. He said no, that we should wait until it's our time b/c so we can enjoy the process.

@Alie: the baby name book sounds fun. Every now and then, we throw out baby names to each other. My husband has surprised me by liking some unconventional names!

@Spaniellove: going to look up this armor blanket thing now....

I haven't purchased anything. But I did get a free bottle from one of the many free formula samples that keep appearing on my doorstep. I've been donating the formula but something about the bottle made me pause and not donate it.

I haven't purchased anything, I've only let myself create a private pinboard to go CRAZY with the planning. It gave me something to focus on during the fertility treatments - happy little baby things :) I do see the point of spacing out the purchases, but I guess we just never felt like we wanted to dive in until we could understand if we would ever even get pregnant.

@spaniellove: Oh, definitely. We should go shopping together!

Oh, I think buying them knowing we have it will somewhat eases my mind. I have been emotionally spending/ splurging on things I don't necessarily need because it's filling the void. I could have at least bought some furniture with the money I've spent.

I think what's good right now is that we have the space (in our garage) so it will still be out of our mind, at least. I don't think I would do it if I had to see it in my apartment everyday.

Before we started I bought a few board books that were on sale. My mom also sent me What to expect when your expecting as well as some of my old baby Halloween costumes. I also got really into making baby booties. All of these things are now stashed in a box, except for the booties which I have given to friends at showers. I also started a baby quilt but haven't felt like working on it. I do think buying things would make me feel hopeful and excited, but would then be hard to look at after a BFN.

I can't bring myself to buy anything, I guess I am superstitious about having it around before I get a BFP.

ETA: Actually I have a bib that I got at an alumni event that says "Future xxx Grad" which is stuffed under all my socks!

We have a baby name book... both my husband and I have gone through and marked all our favorite names.

Sometimes I think about buying other things but I know I would be heartbroken looking at them every month that went by with yet another BFN, so I've held off!

@raintreebee: I've told DH in the past that we should shop up there b/c I don't like the stores we have around here! And I have a Belly Armor blanket too. After last week I had it sort of put away, but my husband came up with the best use for it. I made a comment about how our dog always lies with her head next to my laptop and I wondered if one day she might end up with a brain tumor from years of doing this, so he suggested stuffing the blanket between her head and the laptop. Heck, my dog is more precious right now than a baby I don't have...

@spaniellove: you and bluestriped bee should come up to nyc for your shopping trip! :)

I never bought anything not because we are superstitious but because I thought it might make me sad. I can see the other perspective too. For IVF, my husband did buy a Belly Armor blanket to protect the embryos from cell phone radiation, etc. He is paranoid but sweet.

OMG I was the worst about buying stuff before we got pregnant. For me, it helped me pass the time and I just figured it would help us be more prepared when the time came (which it did). Before our BFP I had...

-a dresser for the nursery
-a mirror for the nursery
-metal storage crates for the nursery
-tons of gender neutral clothes
-2 bibs
-6 burp rags from a vendor on etsy
-2 blankets
-nursery bedding (although we're likely selling it since we don't love it for having a boy)
-Coach diaper bag

Then we broke that "12 week rule" and picked up a stroller and a My Breast Friend off of Gilt and Zulily in the first few weeks because they were great deals.

I had a lot of clothes before I got pregnant. Every time I saw something cute that was gender neutral I bought it. DH and I also both bought Beco Geminis. And I bought a bunch of cloth diapers, some second hand that I got good deals on. It always made me feel better and more hopeful by buying baby stuff. I felt like by not buying anything it was saying it was never going to happen.

@bluestriped bee: I think you should do what feels best for you. If spending this time preparing makes you feel good that you're getting a little bit closer, then that works for you. If having things around gives you anxiety, then of course it doesn't!

@spaniellove: I'm thinking about buying baby furniture if I find a good deal. When we move, we are going to have movers move it. Maybe if I buy the larger things now, I don't have worry about it later. If we don't get pregnant in our new home, we are going to start the adoption process. The time next year, I will be pregnant or starting the adoption process!!
Maybe it will help me move on emotionally that I will be a mom.

Oh, we have space in our garage so if I buy a crib, it will just stay boxed up.

Not because we're superstitious, but I don't have anything! Maybe a few extra children's books I picked up when I was a teacher. But we've decided to just go ahead and buy things because it'll make us feel better.
