The only thing I'd add is that I think worker's comp will only if he was doing something that's within normal business for him. I know one time we were moving cubicles and I got in trouble for carrying a box, because if I'd strained my back or something it wouldn't be covered because heavy lifting wasn't one of my day to day duties.

Thanks everyone. DH has strict orders  to go in and talk to his boss and get a report filled out today! I'm hoping that since apparently no one in his department knew what to do, they'll cut him some slack about it and get everyone up to speed on proper protocol. I'm glad this was only a relatively minor incident.

At our company, you have to apply for worker's comp. So, you have to report it to worker's comp and then they review it and decide if they will cover it. Then you have to get an attorney if they deny it (but obviously that is usually a route taken for a serious injury that may be ongoing etc.)

@CakeLady: workers comp should cover it. When he goes in today, he should tell his boss he ended up going to a doctor later and ask about the proper procedure for filing a claim. They may want him to go see one of the doctors under his company's plan.

It should be covered by workers comp. But our company, we are required to report to HR immediately to get our case started and then they send us to the local urgent care so that it can be billed directly to our work comp insurance. I'm not sure what would happen if we deviated from that procedure.

He did tell his boss and two other co-workers knew as well. His boss is new as of two weeks ago and said something like "oh, I hope you're ok" when he told her. I'm pretty sure if there is a protocol she didn't know about it and my husband didn't either. He works for a small, somewhat isolated department of a university, not a typically dangerous job...

Work should pay and at my company, you have to report the incident within 24 hours. It's an online form for us. I was injured (cut myself) and went to urgent care immediately. After it is reported, my safety guy reviews the incident to see how it can be prevented in the future. If the incident is severe enough, it needs to be reported to OHSA.

Work should pay, but they may not in this case. Where I've worked, you can get severely reprimanded for not reporting even the tiniest injury. He needs to report it to his employer (in case there are bad complications like infection) but he should probably be prepared to be written up or disciplined. Any time that I've been injured (on the job or not) the doctors that treated me always ask if it occurred while on the job. Maybe that is just a requirement from Pennsylvania, though.

He should have done an incident report at work and gone to the doctor then. Because he didn't, I'm not sure he will want to report it. I would think he'd get in trouble. At least that's what I understand from my husbands work. He dislocated his ankle at work and we still get hospital bills even though it was definitely workmans comp!

Did he report it when it happened? Workman's comp should cover it but he might be disciplined if he didn't report it that day. That's how it works where my husband's job anyway.

DH cut his finger pretty badly at work, while doing a work-related task. He bandaged it up to stop the bleeding but had to go to urgent care in the evening to have it glued and steri-stripped closed because it hadn't stopped bleeding. The bill was almost $300.

Since the injury happened while he was doing his job, should work cover the bill?

Has anyone had a similar situation? How did you deal with it?
