there are several things you can do -- wear breast shells at all times, pump briefly before breastfeeding to draw the nipple out, or use a nipple shield. i think eventually your nipples may remain drawn out from breastfeeding, and you should be able to breastfeed successfully!

@Rachel: I am totally in the same boat. My mom and all her sisters weren't able to breastfeed either, which is another thing on top of my flat nip that is a potential obstacle!

I'm super concerned about this - I really want to be successful at bf-ing, but I think this might derail me. I'd love to hear success stories (or struggles) from moms with flat/inverted nipples. I'm hoping I don't have to wear a plastic thingy on my boobs at all times, haha.

It can be. My right nipple wasn't an innie but didn't pop as much as the other and it was a problem breast for feeding.

But that doesn't mean it won't. I'm sure some lactation consultants can help. its pretty common.

This may be TMI, but wanted to get your experiences for future knowledge.

I have a mild "innie"/flat nipple on my left boob. I've read that this shouldn't be a problem, but wanted to get real life info.

Will this be an obstacle in breastfeeding?
