I always stay in bed because once I am up and about, I'm not going back to sleep until bed time again! I try counting backwards from 100 very slowly while deep breathing on each number and try not to focus on anything else but the number. I have a really bad wandering mind that keeps me up at night!

Occasionally I would read baby books on my kindle - it always put me to sleep (mommy fail! lol)

I had to go through some intensive cognitive therapy for my insomnia. They taught me to get out of bed and leave the bedroom. Go into another room and read in dim lighting or watch tv, whatever relaxes you. The screen on your phone/computer is too bright and can wake you up even more. When you feel tired, go back to bed. If you aren't asleep in 15-20 minutes then get back out again.

It also helps to turn your clocks around. Clock watching always made things exponentially worse for me.

depends on what time it is. Before 6, I stay in bed, I usually read. or lay there thinking. My issue is I am usually uncomfortable though. After 6- I get up. The last 2 rmornings I have been up by 6, and then napped on the couch for 1-1.5 hours in the morning. I find that is better then an afternoon nap (got to love holidays ah!! )

I used to just get up, mess around on my iPad on the couch in the living room and would end up passing out there for the rest of the morning. But that was also bc the couch was better for my back pain than the bed, not really bc it helped with the insomnia.

If you want to go back to sleep you should not use your smart phone. :) They say that watching TV or using your smart phone might over simulated your brain which makes it harder to fall asleep. Music is okay though!

Do you have anything you do that can get you back to sleep quickly?

I actually had a talk with my friends about this once. Here are some methods we use to get back to sleep quickly when we can't sleep.

1. Take inventory of anything. (Me) I have a pretty memory so I take a mental inventory of something like my clothes or the food in the kitchen and think about if I have or if I should get rid of or use something soon. I feel this is so boring to think about it, it puts me to sleep actually quite quickly.

2. Start from you head or toes and go through each part and try to wiggle it and say it's name in your head. One of my friends does this, she starts with her toes and does each toe individually and so on, she is usually asleep by the time she gets to her stomach sometimes she doesn't even make it to her thighs. :D

3. Counting backwards from 100. Another friend does this and never gets to 50.

Anyways good luck. I think if it's after 7 I would just get up but before 7 I would try to go back to sleep. :D

It depends when it happens to me. If it's before 5 am I stay in bed. If after, I get up!

I was awake last night from 4 - 6AM (after waking up to pee), just tossing and turning. I played on my phone twice and then tried to go back to sleep, but didn't manage to do so til after 6AM.

What do you do when you can't sleep... stay in bed, or get out and try to do something? This is happening about 2 - 3x a week, and it's SO annoying! I'm too lazy to get out of bed and keep hoping I'll fall asleep soon, but I'm wondering if I should switch up my strategy!
