@Alba4: @SugarplumsMom: My family lives an hour and a half west of DC in a rural area and doesn't even have the option of cable or cable internet. They've been using satellite for years (also on septic/well systems)

@SugarplumsMom: I'm an hour north of NYC. We all have septic, wells, and cable internet. The terrain is very rocky and hilly, so infrastructure is sort of limited.

Fiber optic cables aren't an option where I live. Heck, we don't even have sewers, town water, or sidewalks.

To explain how odd it is, they send out leaflets through the mail, then send a door-to-door salesperson (usually a young boy) to ask around. They don't offer any promotions or any mark downs of the original crazy ass expensive price of $2413! This doesn't include the monthly internet fee. The sales person comes back every few days. He then posts large lawn banners on every home that's signed the deal.

I find this whole process insane.

@T.H.O.U.: Ok, that makes sense. Where I live isn't rural, but the whole county is kind of like a rural area in many ways.

Yes. It's a common practice in rural areas or where the company isn't sure if they will make enough money back to cover the installation costs.

There are subsidy internet programs through Verizon and such.

No. When we moved into our apartment almost 2 years ago we didn't have fiber optic at all. They installed it for free over the winter and we were finally able to switch Internet service providers this spring. We didn't pay any additional fees, and they actually had to come and wire it from the building hallway into our actual apartment.

I voted no b/c the company usually installs lines, then markets the heck out of the service once it's available on your block/in your building (NYC). But DH would definitely pay for it if we needed to; faster internet makes a huge difference, especially if he wants to work from home sometimes.

Out of curiosity, have you ever heard of home owners paying out-of-pocket to have fiber optic lines dug down and installed in their home? It seems to be the norm where I live and I find the practice to be so odd! These are pre-existing homes in established neighborhoods, not newly made or even custom-built homes.

If this is common practice where you live, please include your state/general location or country. And the average price of installation. Thanks!
