P.S. I wouldn't do it at the birth. If you do, your DH's insurance will need to pick up the cost of the birth and the hospital stay, and the claims can get messy. Let your insurance cover the birth, then switch once you're losing coverage under your plan. Does that make sense?

DH and I were both employed for the same company when DS was born so we double insured. I gave my notice to my boss very early that I would be quitting after DS's birth to be a SAHM, and I put my last day of employment as my due date, April 1st. That way, I would still have insurance through the end of the month and the birth would be double covered. DS was actually born a week early, on March 23, so I ended up using my accrued PTO for the last week in order to keep my original end dat eof work and to keep my insurance through the end of April.

In order to give birth on your insurance, you'll either have do something like I described above or you'll have to quit while on maternity leave, so that you're covered. It might be a good idea to check with your company first about your maternity leave policies before making a final decision, just to make sure there are no surprises.

Losing coverage is always a qualifying event. I would wait until after you've technically lost coverage under your plan (once you're a SAHM, and you quit your job), then switch over to your DH's insurance. You have to do this within 30 days of losing coverage though.

Usually during a life changing event you can make changes to your insurance. A birth is considered a life changing event. So you are fine to then add yourself and LO to your DH's plan. You have 30 days to call and make the changes. But I have heard it is best to call right away.

First thing you need to do is call your husband's insurance and find out if you quitting your job is a "qualifying event" that would allow you guys to sign up for the plan outside of the open enrollment period.

Currently DH and I are both on my companies insurance plan - it is very good insurance, but when we do have kids I plan to be a SAHM so we obviously can't be on my plan anymore. Is it easy to switch insurance after the birth? Preferably we'd do labor/delivery on my plan since it's so good I think it would cost us less, but then after that we would have to get onto his. Has anyone else made this kind of switch?
