I agree with what others have said - definitely look into the cost savings that your husband's plan might be able to offer you. My husband and I both can get insurance through our own companies, but we opted to both go on his plan because it was a better plan than mine, although more expensive. It will definitely cover more of my prenatal care when I'm pregnant, which I hope to be next year, so that was the deciding factor for us.

Now that you are married would your boss offer an extra stipend to help you with the premium amount towards your husband's insurance? Maybe if he chipped in the stipend it would make your insurance costs on you husbands plan a little more reasonable without increasing his costs too drastically?

You should check on the open enrollment period for your husband's plan. I don't think pregnancy is a qualifying event to add you in a non-enrollment time. This is usually the time of year that the health plan/benefits materials are distributed at companies that offer them.

I would also look at the cost of a family plan on your husband to account for the child once he/she is born, once all 3 of you are on the same plan it should be cheaper. You can also ask your boss how much the private plan would be and ask you can use that towards your SO plan and you just pay the difference, it might make the 600 more doable.

The other thing to think about is whether you can go on your husband's plan for a set amount of time (ie before you get pregnant and then during) and then switch back afterwards? So it's not forever that you'll be paying that, but perhaps in the meantime your boss will get set up with the group plan?

I agree with @ mrsjyw - I would ask about his future plans generally as to compare against your husbands. I will say, keep in mind for the future that even if your current boss obtains a group plan, it still may be more cost effective to go on your husband's plan even though it is expensive.
My husband and I are paying $600 a month for his health plan (employee + spouse) as opposed to saving $300+ for us each to be on our own (employee only) health plans via our respective jobs. We went this route because his maternity coverage far exceeds mine. So yes, we are paying more per month, but in the long-run we are saving as we aren't having to pay a deductible, and other related costs. To date, given a few early emergency room visits, regular maternity care, lab work, etc, our insurance has been billed over $30,000. We have paid less than $500 out of pocket. If I had stayed with my insurnace via my work, I would have already had to pay quite a bite more out of pocket.

I can totally see that this is a delicate topic that you'd want to tread lightly on. Perhaps you can just ask vaguely what the future insurance plans are for your company. And if he asks why, you can tell him you want to compare between yours and your husband's plans?

As far as cost, the group plan could benefit both the employer and employee depending on how he cuts the costs.

Your situation is a unique one, I personally cant advice because I havent been in a similar situation. Perhaps you could just casually ask if he plans to get the group plan anytime soon and see what he says

My husband and I are ready to start trying for a baby. But our insurance situation is concerning.

SO has great comprehensive coverage through his work. We've looked into adding me to his plan, but to do that will cost us around $600 a month.

Through my job, I have a private insurance plan that I set up myself, and my boss gives me an extra stipend on my paycheck to cover it. I'm the only one in the office that receives this out of my boss and his 3 employees. One of the other employees already had coverage through his mom's plan, and the final employee wasn't offered health insurance right away when she came on board a few months ago. I don't know what her official insurance situation is now at this point.

My private insurance plan does not include maternity coverage of any kind. And unfortunately, in Texas, there is not option for maternity coverage on private plans. At all. Anywhere. It sucks.

I work for a small company and my boss's wife just had a baby. He had mentioned once about possibly considering putting us all on a group insurance plan (my boss + his wife + his three employees) but nothing ever happened with it at this point. When he was orginally considering it, I asked to make sure it included maternity coverage if possible.

I'm thinking about asking him about the possibility of moving us to a group plan now. But I'm a little weirded out about having to discuss my sex life/baby plans/personal life with my boss in this manner. And a group plan will be a lot more expensive for him, and I'm not sure if he wants to offer insurance to everyone in the office like that.

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions?

What is your health insurance situation?
