My friends younger brother had one. I remember hearing the story growing up how she thought she was miscarring, but found out she had been pregnant with twins instead.

That was an interesting article.

I think I will have to tell DD about her twin someday. I have a picture of her as a blastocyst and there is a second blastocyst there so she'll know there was two. I'm not sure what I'll say, but I don't think I can ignore it, especially if she asks.

@blackbird: Fascinating article. That makes sense about including miscarriages too since a vanishing twin is essentially a miscarriage.

I don't think fetal chimerism applies JUST to vanishing twins, but possibly miscarriages, too, because some studies show that the mother reabsorbs those tissues and they find themselves in places like your cardiac tissue. Not that it would necessarily have any genetic information on future embryos, but thought it was interesting nonetheless. With my first pregnancy, I passed a sac but never any fetal tissue, despite being 12ish weeks along. I always assumed I had reabsorbed it between 8 and 12 weeks

This is very interesting. I had a vanishing twin. My mom did not know until the doctor saw the empty extra sac on the ultrasound.

That's a really interesting read. I had a vanishing twin. My mom didn't tell me about it until I was older and at the time I was sort of like oh ok that's interesting, I hope that means I don't have twins. lol. I think that it is helpful to know now in case something ever comes up. I think if you were to tell LO when they were younger they would have no idea how to digest the information.

Oh wow, this is fascinating! I dated a guy in college with a vanishing twin. He has a son now that looks just like him. I wonder if he would pass a paternity test.

Maury may need to do some do-overs!

We still aren't 100% sure that's what it was but my OB believed ds had a vanishing twin that caused my early bleeding. Lost somewhere between 5w1d and 5w4d but we never did see much besides the sac and a little tiny blurry blob on u/s. It was so early and we never saw a hb so I never even thought to possibly tell him!

Wow, that's pretty crazy! I haven't had a vanishing twin, but really interesting read. I suppose I would tell much later on. A friend from college had a vanishing twin while she was in the womb and she knew about it.

@BandDmommy: Did you know you were pregnant with twins before losing one, especially since yours was so early? We didn't even know we were pregnant with twins and had lost one until my 12 week ultrasound. I had passed a weird mass around 6 weeks, but didn't have any U/S until 12 weeks when the U/S tech found an empty sac along with our healthy baby. I too never thought about telling DS about it, but reading this article and seeing the health implications it could have later in life have made me reconsider. But obviously that conversation is light-years away!

We had vanishing twin with my pregnancy with DS. I never considered telling him because we lost the other one so early, around 6 weeks.

I recently read this article about vanishing twins and found it really fascinating because my first child had a vanishing twin, who we lost around 6 weeks. If you know your child had a vanishing twin, would you tell them about it (when age appropriate) for medical reasons?
