@mrbee: thanks for looking into this article! I thought it sounded satirical-this is how my friends who teach anthropology talk about the use of the word paleolithic and the reference to ”cavemen” in this diet :)

@mrbee: Yeah, I think that part of the article is key. We cut down on all the processed foods mentioned, but still have some occasionally. Moderation!

@mrsjazz: I saw this and thought of you, I'll come out of the not-a-fan-of-paleo-too-closet ;) lol

Real or not, I think the article is hilarious! Any and all trendy/fad diets annoy me. We went on a family vacation and my SIL and BIL were hardcore "paleo" this summer- they went through 36 eggs in 3 days. To me that is NOT healthy no matter what title you go by. Also eliminating legumes and eating only animal proteins doesn't seem like the best idea either.

I live in moderation with a little bit of everything and limit portion size. I don't go crazy over processed foods, but that doesn't mean I never have it either. I go for local and humanely raised when I can. The only things I really and truly don't eat ever are foods that make me sick- salmon and Coldstone ice cream.

@mrsjazz: I don't really focus on the term Paleo... this part of the article you linked is the key for me:

<< Most nutritionists consent that the Paleo diet gets at least one thing right—cutting down on processed foods that have been highly modified from their raw state through various methods of preservation. Examples include white bread and other refined flour products, artificial cheese, certain cold cuts and packaged meats, potato chips, and sugary cereals. Such processed foods often offer less protein, fiber and iron than their unprocessed equivalents, and some are packed with sodium and preservatives that may increase the risk of heart disease and certain cancers. >>

I love love love processed food, but cutting down on it has been helpful. Although my taste buds are very sad about it, as I miss my old comfort foods!

@Kemma: @MoonMoon:

I reread the article this morning, and it looks like it's a spoof. The author says that he doesn't know "whether it’s made up or not":
http://mumanu.wordpress.com/2013/11/06/archaeologists-officially-declare-collective-sigh-over-paleo-diet/#comment-939

He also cites hells-ditch.com, where the original article was published last August:
http://hells-ditch.com/2012/08/archaeologists-officially-declare-collective-sigh-over-paleo-diet/

A few of the commenters there reference a disclaimer which used to be at the end of the article (which has been removed), which used to make it clear it's a satire:
http://hells-ditch.com/2012/08/archaeologists-officially-declare-collective-sigh-over-paleo-diet/#comment-57

I wasn't totally convinced but just to confirm, if you Google the name of the doctors (Britta Hoyes, Richard Wenkel, Karl Fenst), the only references that seem to come up are re: this article... suggesting they're made up names. Also I know a lot of scientists, and they don't usually speak in awesome soundbites like this! “Look, the diet itself is sound; it’s the philosophy that’s bullshit. Eat what you want. Just leave the damn cavemen out of it.”

Anyway fun stuff but as far as I can tell, it's a spoof.

We try and just eat as much real food as possible, leading us to a more paleo diet (although, being pregnant, I'm in more of a "whatever sounds good" phase) but we're certainly not strict on it.

@mrsjazz: haha, yes! The seasonality and geography of food has always been a chief complaint of mine re: paleo.
People have been eating legumes for thousands of years and we've certainly evolved as a species in other ways in that time; seems silly not to think that our digestive systems haven't evolved at all.

<< I wish there was a better name for it because I do think that just eating real food could solve a TON of our nation's health problems >>

@tlcbaby: Totally agree with you! It's a study in contrasts that processed food constantly uses all sorts of tricks and deceptive marketing to sell its food, and yet normal food gets dinged for using a term like paleo.

@Mrs. Jacks: I think of paleo-style diets as very different from some of the other diets you mentioned? The main message I took away from Paleo is to avoid most processed foods. That's a healthier message than the Atkin's message of, "You can eat as much meat you'd like as long as you don't eat bread."

I go back and forth with the paleo label. I mean, when I see a recipe for "paleo chocolate donuts with coconut frosting" I get very frustrated because that isn't the point.

I wish there was a better name for it because I do think that just eating real food could solve a TON of our nation's health problems, but people are always going to think it is just another fad.

I consider myself paleo, but I know what it means to me and I think the important thing is just eating what makes you feel good and healthy and staying away from foods that don't, and also avoiding food that isn't food (cookies, soda, etc.).

I cringe when I hear Paleo. A couple I know gravitates towards certain things based off of their pseudo religion. For them, it's Paleo and Crossfit. I think some Paleo recipes are good, but I wouldn't prescribe to it. I like French fries and baked potatoes. I rarely eat bread to begin with.
