i really liked this article. i was the breadwinner (gross overstatement!!) while DH went to school, worked part time, etc and i was still the lead parent because his school and hours were not flexible at all. now that he's the breadwinner and i am still the lead parent, a lot of the pressure put on me (from always having to say yes to work) and on him (by not being able to provide at the moment and not being able to be there physically for the family either) has disappeared. because of his schedule (shift work as a firefighter) i don't know that i'll ever go to work in a typical 9-5 again, but that means i'm free to explore my career as a photographer without feeling like i'm letting the family down. (basically the opposite roles as you and your DH @bluestriped bee:!)

but the important thing is that they recognized the need for that lead parent in their boys life instead of relegating them to paid help, which as top wage earners, they could easily do!

I think what he says is spot on in terms of having a lead parent needing to back up the high power parent. I think every family does what's right for them and co-parenting looks different for each couple, but the great takeaway is to look critically and without ego at each other's careers and goals and drives and figure out a balance that works.

This is our situation as of yesterday. My husband will be staying home with our DD until she turns a year in April. For all kind of reasons, financial and otherwise, this set up works for our family.

Interesting read. Only read the first half but as someone who is the current breadwinner in the family and with DH being an artist, we kinda knew before we got married that DH said he would love to be a SAHD. I definitely don't make the money the wife makes in the article but at this moment we should be comfortable with my income. We'll make adjustments if we have to.

Interesting read. I enjoyed reading his perspective, but at the same time, I wonder how the story would be different if Slaughter wasn't making $600,000+ a year....
