@Mrs. Pen: Actually I think I've learned more about home schooling from you and your posts than anywhere else! It's so interesting to hear from someone who lived it, rather than just some random set of statistics on the internet :) I know you can make sure the socialization happens without actual 'school' but I think it's harder-- at least early on, the parents have to work to make sure it's happening. And since it's very uncommon where I am, I think it would be hard to find a community of other home schoolers.

But like I said, I totally get why it works for other families and if it turned out that regular school wasn't working out for my kids, I'd certainly look at other options.

I agree with previous posters - the infographic is a bit misleading. We've talked about it - I think it's be more of a struggle to find secular homeschooling resources & cooperative opportunities. That being said, we'd look into it seriously if we moved to an area where they were teaching creationism in the classroom or the class sizes were out of control.

@Mrs. Pen: thanks for clarifying, although I was referring to how some states require teachers to set goals for students to gauge our effectiveness & they are not often aligned well to students' actual learning. There are also some other bureaucratic things I think homeschool families don't have to deal with :) Like I said, I do agree with you that homeschooling is often extremely positive and beneficial for kids!

@mewtill: Actually homeschooling are requried to answer to their school district. This varies among each state, but growing up we had to take our end of the year tests and submit them to the district so show we were keeping up with our studies. There are some states that require "umbrella homeschooling" which means they must follow the school districts curriculum and report and submit all work to the school which really makes it more of a homeward bound program as opposed to traditional homeschooling.

I really like seeing things like this as I was homeschooled with a mostly positive experience! I love to share information because I feel there are a lot of myths and misconceptions regarding homeschooling and in the right family/situation, it can be truly beneficial and successful.

My husband and I are definitely considering it, although we're actually leaning to send J to school only because working is important to me, and I can't homeschool and work. BUT we have discussed the possibility of DH being a SAHD if I can make a stable enough income to support us; and he is a mathematics instructor so he is more than qualified!

I agree that they aren't exactly comparing apples to apples, since having involved parents clearly makes a big difference.

I would not consider it at this point. I think the socialization aspect is as important as the actual studies. But, I can see situations where it would be better for certain families, just not for us.

I'm not sure about these statistics, but we are thinking about it because we don't like our neighborhood school and the alternative is a pricey Friends school in a nearby town. In our case it makes some sense, though, because I'm a certified teacher planning to WAH/SAH.

I feel our school system in Canada is generally quite strong (though it varies from province to province) and I am an elementary school teacher so I believe in the public school system.

We're not considering it. Hubs and I both work full-time out of the home. Xander (and any future LOs) will be going to public school. But Hubs and I do find education VERY important and we'll be encouraging our children to do well in school and help them with homework and be as involved as possible in their schooling.

Yeah, that infographic seems baised and has some sketchy information. I didn't really like the part about home schooled kids not being affected by "external factors". Um, what about things like having parents who clearly care about your education, having a steady source of food, and reduced amounts of life stress? Those are some pretty heavy "external factors".

That said, I think home schooling can be a seriously great option! If I had 2-3 kids in my classroom, was free from ridiculous state-mandated goals, and could let my students explore and learn at their own pace through intrinsically motivating topics - well I'm sure they'd be outranking public school kids too!

[I really don't hate home schooling, I just get frustrated with "information" like this because it doesn't do anything to help improve the quality of education for kids who don't have a homeschooling option.]

The statistics seem a bit manipulated and I agree it isn't really comparing apples to apples. Some of the sources are sketchy.

That said, it is still pretty interesting to see, Homeschooling simply isn't an option for us.

I've thought about it..... but I just don't think it's for us. As much as I want LO home with me at all times, I know she needs to get out of the house and meet new people, learn discipline from someone else, etc.

how many of you would consider home schooling? I know I have considered it a few times!
