You could get the sideboard, then add a mix of shelving and pictures above it, put your "prettiest" books with cute bookends on the shelving about the side board, and the "ugly" books inside the side board ... If you use a mix of long and short shelves, and put the framed pictures on the wall it could look cute.

ETA: Something like this http://www.desiretoinspire.net/blog/2012/5/10/r-brad-knipstein-part-2.html

@Arden: I used photoshop - sorry!!!

However before I have used style me pretty - it's supposed to be design board for weddings but I have used it for baby stuff before. Bummer is you can't save the image as a jpg to your computer, so I'd have to paste the code to my blog, then download it from my blog as a jpg. kind of a roundabout.

If you put it on the other wall with the lightswitch, put the pouf under the lightswitch.

@photojane: true. That's what DH said. In the event I can't store all of them - my sister offered to let me store some of my stuff at their house because they have more closets than they know what to do with in their apt! (jealous!) these are books I never really read or refer to - but don't want to get rid of..

@Boogs: maybe it's my lighting - but what shade of grey is that? it looks kind of purplish?

@lemondrop: we had considered the grey one (we have cream/beige walls so not sure how the white would look against it)... I do like the idea of the bamboo or jute style boxes... I wonder how it would look with molding... hmm!! I should see if someone's done that on pinterest.

And thank you! there is a small local shop here that sells upcycled and refurbished furniture - we scored the hutch for about $150 during one of their sales. I love it.

I like the campaign bookshelf a lot and think it would look perfect on that wall in your first picture. TBH the Expedit you had there was a little wide, I think it looks better to have something with breathing space on either side.

There's also this from IKEA in gray-brown:

What about dressing up old Expedit with some molding around the edges to take away some of the modern look? I second changing the color of Expedit too. We have a white one, it looks much less modern, especially when we add baskets to it.

Yes, I am drooling over your hutch!

@Mrs. Pen: ohhh okay! I actually really like the World Market one, and I would put it on the same wall you had the expedit. If you find that it looks weird with the wall not being filled enough you could get some square frames, paint them yellow, fill them with funky/vintage fabrics, and hang them vertically beside the shelf (between the shelf and bedroom door). I don't think you'd even need to do that though.

Nope! Maybe you could get a pouf and C could lounge and read? http://www.target.com/p/threshold-upstate-pouf/-/A-14391200#?lnk=sc_qi_detaillink

Maybe you could scoot your tv stand over there to see how it feels size-wise? It will be too wide of course, but for height reasons.

Do you have painters tape? You can always tape off the area and see how it feels to have something there. I do that way too often. Tape paper over it so it covers the entire space and you can see how it will take up the wall?

maybe you could do a different finish on the expedit to go more with your color scheme and style (white wash or yellow maybe?) and then cover cardboard squares with shabby chic fabric to fill in the back. I think lightening it up and adding a bright, fun fabric would completely change the look without having to buy a whole new piece.

Maybe something shallow? It doesn't have to be as wide as the Expedite, but you don't want it to come out too far from the wall. I really like the World Market one.

This one is 13" deep.

Okay, bear with me.. i'm about to link a million diffrent ones. The short ones are more geared towards Cobi being able to reach them, the taller ones I *think* are your style, and you could very easily paint them or age them to match better.

Apartment is one big open room- kitchen, dining and LR. So this blue hutch faces the LR, very shabby chic/vintage. Our dining room table is also shabby chich beige.

@Thehistoryofus: I don't mind if he pulls off the books and reads them, he did that when we had the expedit. We plan to anchor the bookshelf to the wall though. He is more interested in his bookshelf than ours though.

this is how the expedit looked in the space:

I think you Could put it in the all if it was like a narrow media shelf. What kind of books do you have? Paperbacks aren't deep but hardcover ones are.

I agree the expedit isn't a great choice for this space but what about putting some yellow behind it to brighten it up.

Also just curious what are you going to do about C? We just moved a bookshelf out to our sun porch which is also her play area and she immediately went to pull all the books off and "read" them.

We live in an apartment and probably will be in apartment living for many more years (not necessarily this apartment). We are trying to spruce up our space a little bit to feel more homey and motivating. We chose yellow and grey as a color scheme. Our style tends to be more shabby chic. We have a robins egg blue shabby chic hutch in our dining room (open to LR) so we're including blue in the color scheme too.

This is our issue: We need a bookshelf for our books, we had the ikea expedit and liked it, but it looked too modern for our space. If you look at this one wall, I'm not sure if putting a more narrow bookcase there would look okay. Or should I see if I could put it at the end of the hallway wall?

I like this campaign bookshelf from world market and it matches our style a little more: http://www.worldmarket.com/product/campaign-bookshelf.do?&from=fn
It's neutral and wherever we move to, it would be easy to fit into a new space.

We have boxes and boxes of books so we need to figure something out.

Unfortunately there are no other walls available that would work for a bookshelf. And we don't have the storage space for boxes of books.

Ideas?

Our space - first picture is the far wall of our livingroom. That door to the right is our bedroom. To the left is the hallway that leads to the bathroom and front door.
Next pic: is the wall kitty-corner. Could be a possibility for a bookshelf? but it would make the hall to the bathroom pretty narrow.
Last pic: our LR design board. We have those grey curtains and we have the yellow cabinet/table for underneath the TV. We're buying a grey couch soon.
