@lamariniere: and @looch: we're relocating from the US to Australia. I get reimbursed for moving costs up to a set amount, so I need to organize the movers myself and I don't think it'll cover full service moving. Fortunately I'm in faculty housing this year, so the majority of our stuff is already boxed up in a storage unit. Australia is an absolute nightmare in terms of clearing customs and quarantine, though, so I'm not looking forward to the other end.

Not going to lie, the thirteen hour flight with a very busy, very loud toddler is probably what I'm dreading most.

I've done 2 international moves, both with my son.

Is your company paying for the move? My husband's companies paid for both moves. The movers did all of the packing AND unpacking, which was awesome. The moving company also included insurance and customs/duties. How international is your move? Our first was US to Europe and our second was within Europe. The transatlantic move took 7 weeks for our stuff to arrive. However, we were allowed extra baggage on the flight on our first move and 1sq meter of air freight on the second.

Depending on where you are going and how big/small your new home will be, you may want to get rid of a lot of stuff. Or, you may want to stockpile certain things that are harder to find where you are going. If I could do it over, I definitely would have brought extra stuff.

Feel free to wall me if you want details about anything.

Oh fun! I've done two international moves, one company sponsored and childless, one not company sponsored with a 2 year old!

The most difficult thing on the second move was packing, but that was because I had a child underfoot and we had to do it ourselves. I assume with a company relo, someone will do that for you?

So, it looks like we'll be doing an international move for work. I'm excited for the new job, which is in our home city, but the start date is SOON. We'll have both sides of the family at the other end to help us out and look after LO while we settle in and find childcare, but I'm kind of overwhelmed by everything we have to do.

Any Bees done an international relocation with a baby/toddler? Any good tips for smoothing the transition?
