@Snowybreeze: we just returned from an international trip with our 2 year old so I'll try to answer some of your questions!

1. Our airline (Air Canada) stated that baby bottles and medicine are exempt from the 100 ml rule, so I think you could take a bottle for your kid no problem, then during the flight could probably request milk if you need more.

2. My kid had to walk through the security scan with me, but it wasn't a body scan machine. My understanding is that you're allowed to ask for an alternative pat down for those?

3. My kid didn't seem to have any issues with ears popping on take off or landing. I was afraid to give him hard candy for fear of choking, so I just have him some m&ms to munch on and that seemed ok.

4. I don't know about kid play areas but Tokyo has so many shops and spaces to wander through! Maybe someone has blogged about this?

5. On one flight I changed my son with him standing up in the airplane bathroom. On the return flight, we changed him right before boarding, then skipped it on the flight! At 2, they don't need super frequent diaper changes so it worked out. Is doable on board though.

6. We didn't take a stroller and relied on our carrier, which was great! I won't lie though, sometimes I saw other kids in strollers and felt envious... it wasn't worth the hassle for us though, since we were already lugging a convertible carseat with us. On that note, I do recommend a carseat cart!

Good luck!

The only thing I can comment on is about the milk....don't make any assumptions that the airline can accomodate you. If you need to bring it on, buy it in single serving, sealed containers because there might not be refridgeration or microwaves available to you on the plane.

I've never had any issue with factory sealed food and bringing it on planes, in any amount when travelling with a child.

1) Any food for the baby/toddler is good to go. Just present them all at the body scan area, no need to wrap them up in plastic, but be aware that they can/will open one and test it/have you try it. As for milk, if you want it cold, then I suggest either buying it at your stopover, or asking the airlines for some milk. They will oblige. You can even enter it in the special request portion of your ticket (don't forget to call a few days before to make sure). I flew internationally when LO was less than a year and wasn't yet weaned. She had special milk, and I carried tons of it. I went through a few scans (opted for a body scan each time) and was hassled one time by the amount of milk I brought - she said it should only be enough for the flight. Her supervisor flat out laughed at her for being young and not having any kids and just waved us by.

2) No. You don't have to go through them either. Just walk over to the side with your kids and they will pat you down. This is when you present all your kid's food as well.

3) Give them a bottle.

4) No idea, I haven't flown to Asia with LO.

5) I made sure she's in something easy to take on/off. I honestly don't remember how I did it - I think I changed her at the seat once (on a blanket).

6) Yes! I would gate check the stroller. Request this at the ticket counter and they might even give you a big bag or a big sticker. You use the stroller just until you get to your gate and tell the people at the gate - they'll likely tell you to leave it off on the side. They load it on the plane after everyone boards, so that it's easier to take out when you land. Your stroller will be waiting for you in the corridor/at the gate when you land.

Eta: during our international flight, I wore her and I thanked myself the whole way. However, when she was 1.5 we had a shorter international flight and gate checked the stroller. I thanked myself the whole way as well :silly: it was too hot to wear her and she was perfectly happy exploring, and was a little too big (for me) to wear. I loved how convenient it was to have the stroller waiting for us - it made maneuvering the airport so much more convenient!

1. Flying out of the US you are allowed to bring as much liquids/food for baby as you want (breastmilk, formula, water, food pouches), and that is regulated by the TSA. You'll have to check the regulations of the country you are flying into for their requirements. But like @lamariniere said, I'm not sure what they'll be drinking at 2/4 yo and likely you can get something (like WCM) in the airport or from the airline.
2. Like @lamariniere said, no one has to go through body scanners, you can request a pat down or metal detector.
3. We try to encourage our 10 month old to drink during takeoff and landing, but that doesn't always work and he seems fine regardless. When he was younger we did the paci too. I've also heard some parents bring lollipops as a special treat (but our guy is too young for that).
4. Airports are great for people watching, so the kids might not need a special "kids" play area ;-) Singapore's Changi airport was the nicest airport I've even been to -- and it has a kids' area.
5. Diaper changing station in the bathroom, although 2/4 year olds might be a little big for that... Could also change at their seats/on the floor.
6. I personally would not bring a stroller but would wear them. I think you need to evaluate where you will be (paved streets, malls, etc or on boats, outdoor markets, etc) to make an informed decision about whether a stroller would work for you or not.

1. As long as it's under 100 ml, you should have no problem bringing it onto the plane in a clear zip bag.
2. If there are mandatory body scan machines, then yes, they do. However, sometimes they don't make you go through them, and I travel quite frequently and I haven't been made to go through one yet.
3. Unless they are sick, their ears shouldn't be painful. The only time my ears have ever hurt was when I had a terrible infection, and even then it wasn't terrible pain, just a lot of pressure and hearing loss for a few days. If they are old enough to follow instructions, tell them to pretend yawn during ascent, and especially descent.
4. Not sure, haven't been to all before, probably can find on Google.
5. After you are allowed to move about the plane, check out all the bathrooms. Some can be bigger, some can be smaller. Some have plenty of room for diaper changes, even some have tables for them.
6. I wouldn't recommend bringing a stroller, nor do some airlines allow it. If you aren't super tight on money, I would just recommend buying one there for use only there.

We took our son to Asia, but from Europe, when he was almost 2.5.

1. As for milk, you are allowed to carry on the quantities of baby items that you need. That said, you might be able to ask for extra milk on the plane, and at 2, we were no longer using WCM.
2. No, kids do not have to go through body scan machines. I don't think anyone has to, you can ask for a pat down no matter your age.
3. I bring a straw cup and encourage my Los to drink water when the cabin pressure is changing. I also bring lollypops for them to suck on.
4. Don't know.
5. Most large airplanes have a fold down changer in the bathroom. Granted, a 2yo will be huge on this, but it is possible to change. Otherwise, change on the seat or the floor (with a changing mat!), there really aren't any other options.
6. As for strollers, it depends on where you are going and what you are doing. We were in Thailand and Cambodia with our son. The sidewalks were really narrow or non existent or rough for a Maclaren. We carried him in an ergo a lot. My cousins with children told me most people don't have strollers and have nannies that carry the kids.

One last thing, we did not bring a car seat. Car seats are not required in many Asian countries. The reason we didn't bring a car seat was not because we didn't have to, but because many cars also do not have seatbelts or a way to install a car seat in a correct and safe way. For longer day trips, we were able to hire private vans and request a car seat, but you could tell they weren't used to using them since they were often installed incorrectly.

I'm way early in the planning. We plan on making a trip to Vietnam either end of 2016 or spring/summer of 2017, when DD is about 4 and DS is about 2.
some questions:
1) I anticipate DS will still be drinking whole milk in a bottle at that age, what are we going to do about that for the plane ride? What are the current rules for bringing food/drinks onto carryons?

2) Do the kids have to go through the body scan machines?

3) What/how do you console the kids when their ears pop from the pressure on the plane?

4) which asian international airport has a play area for the kids during layovers?

5) The bathrooms are so tiny on the plane, how did you deal with diaper changes?

6) Do you recommend bringing a stroller?

I'm sure I'll have more questions later!
