Oh gosh yes definitely go! I was just there in September at nearly 7 months pregnant. Did the 7 mike hike from Imerovigli to Oia. It was beautiful. I’d totally go. There are tons of flights back to Athens daily should something happen. The food is amazing. Skip Athens.
avoid fira. Way too touristy. I’d look at
Imerovigli. Also look at Naxos if you want another island

I went to Positano for my first babymoon at 25 weeks. Unless you’re high risk I wouldn’t really think twice! Have fun!

@YogiRunner: can you just get a booster shot before the trip?

I think I would go as long as you are still in second tri. Also can you bump up the date by a few weeks? I know it's for his birthday but you will have great memories either way and in general I think earlier is better for pregnancy travel.

I am currently 18weeks with twins, so probably the physical equivalent of a further-along singleton pregnancy, and right now I think I would feel physically fine to travel to Greece. My OB just approved me to travel at 21 weeks with no restrictions provided that my cervical length still looks good at my 20-week checkup. (But that is twin-specific, I think.) We are currently eyeing domestic destinations, but that is mostly because we are bringing our 4yo and are going to be gone while a construction project is going on in our living room. So I want to be available by phone.

Thanks all, this is generally what I wanted to hear  I think we'll go for it and get the travel insurance just to ease my mind and talk to my OB about any precautions when I see her.

@theotherstark: yes, if you have a negative blood type and you have any bleeding during pregnancy, you need the shot within 72 hours. I actually had it at 6 weeks and it will last until 18 weeks, but not 20. I might ask if I can just bring it with me as a precaution?

@Beehive: I know, I was surprised to hear it too - apparently when she went a few years ago she looked into it since she's a nurse, and the hospital was "a shack", and was told emergencies are handled in Athens.

I would go and just gave travel insurance that covers emergency evacuation, etc. Make sure you read the fine print and it covers pregnancy.

I haven't been to Santorini (we just got back from Athens, though) - but I can't believe they don't have a hospital there. People live there year round. I'd personally go, but get travel insurance that has an emergency medical component (like they will pay for an airlift). I got travel insurance for the first time on our last trip (through Travelex), and I was amazed at how much was covered for such a reasonable cost. That way if you need to cancel for a medical reason, or if you have an emergency while you're there, you'll be covered.

I've been to Santorini and I've traveled far away 20 weeks pregnant. My concerns would be that it's bumpy and a lot of walking. You'll be lopsided and clumsy, so there's an increased risk of injury. Plus a lot of food is made with unpasteurized dairy. So I wouldn't go, but I'd be annoyed because it'd probably be okay.

I'd go to almost anywhere else in Europe without a second thought.

I would probably go as 20 weeks seems like a pretty low risk time. But of course something always could happen - could you check into intl emergency med coverage for peace of mind? I think some credit cards may even offer it as a perk ... but not sure. I’ve never had it just crossed my mind.

I am leaving for Paris in 2 weeks and will be 23-24 weeks. My OB is very supportive and said this is the best time to travel because there so little risk of anything going wrong. He did tell me to bring my medical records with me, just in case. That said, I’m not familiar with rhogam shots...so I’d just do what makes you the most comfortable. And don’t worry about calling the OB to ask about it, that’s what they’re there for!

Well, seeing as I went to Greece when I was around 20 weeks pregnant... ha.

I don’t know all the issues around the Rhogam shot. Would you need that if you have any bleeding?

I traveled to Europe during both of my pregnancies - 26-28 weeks with DD1 and 21-22 weeks with DD2. And pregnancy #2 was technically considered high-risk (previous pre-eclampsia). Unless you have a unique case, I think the risk of something happening requiring immediate medical care at 20 weeks is very rare. Baby hasn't even hit viability yet at that point.

I would absolutely go and enjoy yourself. Get up regularly during the flights to prevent blood clots & swelling and take it a little easier than you would non-pregnant. Sounds like an awesome trip!

DH and I have been planning a birthday trip for him in May to Santorini and maybe another island in Greece. I'll be in my 20th week of pregnancy.

I asked my NP during my first OB visit and while she got really excited at first (she went there for her honeymoon), she did say that if a medical emergency came up, the only option is a med flight to Athens. I'm A- bloodtype so am mostly worried about bleeding and needing to get a shot of Rhogam. She left it with, just know the risks, and maybe talk to the OB during my next visit (in 2 weeks). But we'd like to book the travel sooner than later and I feel silly calling the office to ask to speak with their one very busy OB about my vacation.

So I know this is a really privileged problem to have, but would you cancel the trip and go somewhere more local with access to emergency medical care?
