@annem1990: I am a hiring manager so I have been interviewing a ton lately. After the “official” interview questions I typically ask people about salary expectations and anticipated start date/anything i should know about, and also review the benefit package. This is before an offer is made. If the topic is brought up in that way he should totally be up front. If there is no foood opening from the company I would wait until the offer is made.

I’ve done this before and waited until the offer. It ended up not being a big deal at all.

I wait until the job is offered to me. I generally make it clear that I don't expect to be able to use PTO if I haven't earned it yet.

I also say wait until the offer assuming it’s a full time salaried role. This is what I usually heard as a recruiter and we never had a problem with it for the right person.

@MrsBucky: I should have been more clear about that. By during the interview process I was including the whole offer stage. For temp positions we don’t have flexibility so need to know before offering, but yes for regular positions bringing that up once the offer is made but before you have accepted the position is good.

I have mentioned preplanned days off/vacations after I have received a job offer. I always say something like
"With the excitement of this opportunity with you I don't think I've mentioned this trip that is preplanned etc." Then I say something about of course you understand it will not be a paid vacation from them etc and sort of let them respond. It's never been an issue. When I accepted my current position in 2015 with a June 1 start date, I had a Mexico trip planned for July and they were fine with it.

@Becky: I’d counter that there is a difference between not being up front and bringing it too early. Also between a short term position or when you are explicitly asked about scheduling v. A long term position where it typically doesn’t come up. I don’t think waiting until an offer is on the table is inconsiderate and as someone who has interviewed 50+ people, I’d find it presumptuous and a red flag if someone brought up vacation time before we’d even decided to extend them an offer. But I’m sure it varies somewhat by interviewer, industry and company, too!

I have always been up front in the interview process about planned trips and it's never steered me wrong. My potential bosses (who turned into actual bosses) appreciated the heads up. In one case, I just had to work extra the week before and after to make up the time (I was hourly). In the other job, it was months in advance but it was a destination race that I had already paid for.

A friend of mine has had a lot of jobs and a love of travel. Once the offer has been made she would then bring up travel that would impact her start date or they would have to accomodare early on even if she had not accrued the PTO.

The potential start date has always come up for me in interviews and that’s the opportunity I take to share upcoming vacation plans.

I’ve never heard of a candidate not getting a job over a trip that’s already been booked.

Agree to wait till he gets the offer first then negotiate start date. I was moving/getting married barely a month from starting my new job. They refused to let me start late, so I just went on and was off with no pay to move/get married/go on honeymoon.

It’s very frustrating to me when interviewees aren’t up front about planned committments. We have temporary positions every summer, and this year I asked people to review the schedule to see if they could accommodate it, and almost everyone brought up at least one conflict like a vacation and I really appreciated this as now we can plan around it. I’d say about half the regular staff I’ve hired have brought up committments during the interview process, including things like getting married 5 months down the road. We have had people in the past who did not share planned vacations, and it ended up being a scheduling issue and it was also frustrating because had they been upfront it wouldn’t have caused a problem. We’ve never refused to accommodate someone who had a prior commitment (we’ve had people take unpaid leave if they didn’t qualify for paid leave yet).

For my first real job, I was upfront about needing a few days off for my wedding a few months down the road and they told me I would just have to work X number of extra hours ahead of time.

In short: be upfront. Unless the employer is a robot they’ll probably recognize that people have lives outside work, and that most people have summer vacations scheduled well in advance.

It's not exactly the same, but I started my new job in late March, with my wedding mid May, with a 9 day honeymoon planned and paid for immediately after. I told them when I interviewed what was going on, and they liked the headsup and didn't hold it against me, they paid me vacation time... Thankfully they were also understanding when I had a surprise pregnancy a few months later...

Agreed. Negotiations for a job begin once you have an offer in hand. If going on a trip makes or breaks whether you get this job, they didn't want you that bad.

Wait for the offer, then negotiate start date and time off then. Once they decide he is the right person, they will be more willing to negotiate! If they decide he isn’t the right person, it’s a non issue.

DH is in the final stages of the interview process for a new job. It’s a small company. He’d be the only person with this particular job title.

We have a 10 day trip to Europe planned in July. DH seems to think the ability to go or not would be a dealbreaker for accepting the job. It’s already paid for and he would hate to miss it.

My question: Do you bring up the trip in the interview? If they make an offer? I SAH and he’s had the same job since college so we’re totally unaware of what’s appropriate!
