@MrsADS: Here (NY/NJ) they are pretty common. For me, it's no different than day care centers that have cameras set up so you can watch online during the day - everyone likes to see what's up with their kid, especially when they are so young.

@madison43 Thank you! That's very helpful. I have no clue what the "standard" is for sitters/nannies - do they expect it or do they think it's distrustful, offensive, etc.

@MrsADS: no one was freaked out. It was literally a non issue for every person I interviewed. We have cams in the girls' bedrooms, the living room and the playroom -

@madison43 @menageriemama how many cameras did you get and where did you put them? LO's room obviously but where else? The ones I see on Amazon are pricey. Also were your nannies/sitters offended or freaked out by it?

We used drop cams. At first I was totally against nanny cams but then we had issues with LO crying nonstop with the new nanny and I wanted to be able to see what was going on. Now I will never go back! I loved being able to peek in on her and the nanny we found that was a wonderful fit would even tell us to check in from time to time. I always disclosed to anyone (even pet sitters - helped us one time when she wasn't coming when she said she was!). We never used them to nit pick. Only safety issues or if the nanny requested feedback. Worth their weight in gold. LO is in daycare now and we use them for security. Wish I had 2 more!

@Madison43 those drop cams look nice. A little pricey.. I think I may have to get something like that just for my peace of mind.

@MrsADS: We have nanny cams - they are just drop cams set up in the house right out in the open. Both nannies we've used knew about them and have been totally fine with them. When LO1 was little, her nanny would even text me to watch one when something fun was happening (trying to roll, etc....) so I could see it in real time..

I was clear in our interviews that we don't CIO to make sure potential nannies were on board - our first nanny really believed in CIO and had been very successful in helping sleep train a bunch of her former charges. She definitely thought we should have sleep trained, but she always carried out our instructions to rock, pick up, etc....(I know because we had a camera in Lo's room and I used to stream the feed on my desktop at work during nap time).

As for the feeding, you should ask if she has experience with EBF babies and pace feeding. If she doesn't, I dont think its a bad thing, just something you'll need to teach her.

We are interviewing a possible sitter for our 4 month old today. It would be for 2 days a week. We've talked to her over the phone, seems nice. She watches a friend's 5 month old a few days a week and they love her.

I have a list of questions but would love to hear from you experienced mamas anything else you think is important to ask, I am sure I'm forgetting stuff. We've already discussed days/compensation/etc. but there may be stuff I'm forgetting about that as well.

My main concerns are:

(1) feeding. Baby is EBF and takes bottles fine, but I'm concerned that the sitter won't pace feed baby and it will jeopardize our BF relationship. I just went back to work last week and DH has been watching LO. He pace feeds him VERY slowly (20 mins for 4 oz) and even with that, we're having some issues of him not wanting to nurse when I first get home after being gone all day. How do I ensure that the sitter does it when I'm not even here? Also concerned a sitter may overfeed him, or misinterpret "sleepy" or "cranky" or whatever as "hungry.".

(2) Sleep. We don't do CIO, we rock to sleep, pick him up when he wakes up (no judgment please). LO has bad reflux/GI issues and cries a lot as it is from pain. How do I know the sitter will do this for naps? What if he starts crying and she just leaves him in his crib? I will never know. I'm so so worried about this. :(

(3) Nanny cam. Do you/did you use one? If we did, we would definitely disclose to the nanny FIRST but I don't know what the "standard" is about this. I could see some really seeing it as not trusting them... but this is my only baby, I don't trust him with anyone but DH and my mom!! And if we got a camera, it wouldn't be so much to "check up" on the sitter but more as just a reminder that we COULD if needed. I don't know.

Any other ideas?? I keep thinking of horrible things that could happen... like what if she decides to feed the baby something... (he's got severe food intolerances/possible FPIES)... it goes on and on!

So, any thoughts or questions I should ask? Anything you can tell me to put my mind at ease? We have to do it but I am struggling with leaving my baby alone with a stranger. Daycare is not on the table until he's older because of his health issues.
