I think the semi-supervised trial is normal. I think also saying Friday is a trial day (unsupervised) is normal and that you plan to make a final decision next eek. I also would say once she is hired that you will review her after a month or something or say one month trial period kind of thing. We made the mistake of not doing that with our first part time nanny, and after it did not work out and I let her go after 3 weeks, I had to hold up to giving her notice or severence...and she filed for unemployment. It was a hassle.

I wouldn't worry too much about the call timing, though I'm a nutcase with naps and would be annoyed that she was napping my 8 month old in the stroller. But you can be specific about your needs / wants.

I think a supervised/semi-supervised trial is totally normal, and I don't think it would be weird to tell her that you'd like to have her come Friday as part of a 1-2 week trial period (since you can't always decide in just one 2hr trial). So you could have her come Friday, but then if you find someone else, you can just let her go saying it wasn't working/etc. Up to you on whether you tell her you are still interviewing others.

And a little weird on the timing of the call, but I've done calls with potentials while their charges were napping. So not totally crazy.

A few questions for all of you experienced mamas who have successfully found reliable childcare (since I seem to be challenged in this department):

-I am doing phone interviews and then having them come over for a couple hours semi supervised. Is this weird?

-specific logistics with above question: I have two more phone interviews tomorrow, and I just did one I liked today. This girl is gonna come over for 2 hours tomorrow to do the semi supervised trial. I mentioned on the phone if everything goes fine, she could start on Friday (that's the day we need coverage). That is a little rushed, but I need someone to watch him on Friday anyways. If I like the other two interviews tomorrow, what do I do? Tell her Friday is just a second trial before we decide for real? Just be honest and say we are trying two more sitters next week?

-last question: is it weird she was doing the phone interview with me while watching another kid? She does a mothers helper type job where she is in and out of the house with an 8 mo and was walking home from the park. She wasn't trying to hide it, she mentioned that the baby was falling asleep right now as she was walking.
