@runnerd: I ended up with unpaid leave from my company, but will get some compensation from the state.

Having non-paid leave in 9 months is better than having no pay for the next 10+ months! I say go for it and deal with the obstacles when they come.

@runnerd: Plus if it is a pay raise, it could work out that even with unpaid leave with them, you'll make more than you would at your current job with paid leave, you know? Good luck.

I don't think it hurts to apply. If you get the job, then you can talk about maternity leave and make your decision based on that.

I did at about 20 weeks, and did not disclose until they made an offer, but before I accepted. I wanted their decision to be based on my merit. I figure, if they really didn't want to hire me due to my pregnancy, it would show in our negotiations on compensation and what not. Even though it's illegal to discriminate due pregnancy, I wouldn't want to work at a company that wasn't supportive of my pregnancy anyway.

Luckily, in the end, they were very understanding and gave me the maternity leave I wanted and the job protection I would have gotten under FMLA if I was eligible.

I'd certainly apply that early in pregnancy and see what happens. The points about leave are important, but paid leave is pretty much not guaranteed anywhere in the US. If you received an offer, I'd find out their policy, as well as confirm the policy at your current job before making a decision.

I agree with people that the only issue I'd see is maternity leave. I would still do the interviews though-- it sounds like you've been watching for a while and haven't seen something like this come up. You'd work there for many months before leaving to prove yourself. Other people with more HR know how might answer this better, but I wonder if you can bring up maternity leave in your salary negotiation if you are offered the job? The other thing is, with working from home, it might be easier to ease back in to working a little earlier than you would if you were going back to your office.
I say go for it now and see what happens.

@runnerd: Keep in mind some places don't offer paid leave even if you HAVE been there a year. I don't have any 'paid maternity leave', but I do have short-term disability (50% pay for 6 weeks). This kicked in after I was here for 6 months. You still wouldn't be eligible for FMLA, but that doesn't offer any pay - just secures your job for 12 weeks.

I know it stinks. I want to look for a new job last year but didn't cause I knew that we were going to start TTC. So now I am just going to start looking while on maternity leave.

I would just worry about maternity leave. Most companies won't pay you any time if you haven't been there long enough.

The only issue with getting a job when you are already pregnant is you won't be eligible for FMLA, which provides job protection for 12 weeks while you are on leave. You have to be at a job for a year before you deliver to be eligible. BUT - not all jobs are even covered under FMLA, and it's possible a new employer would still give you a generous leave.

I did it at 26 weeks and didn't tell them until they offered me it, but it was only a temp job. In your situation I would defo do it, you would be there for months before baby.

I've been casually watching the job boards for my industry and recently found 3 work from home opportunities I'd like to apply for. I'm barely 5 weeks pregnant. What are your thoughts on applying and possibly interviewing? My #1 career dream is work from home! Is the timing just wrong? Thanks for input!
