Welcome! My sister went through a very similar situation. With the new health insurance laws mental health is required to be covered in parity, meaning that they are required to cover it with the same copays as physical health... So I'd check again. Also, an IEP will be very helpful to getting your child the help he needs at school. They will be required by law to give him the attention and support he needs.

Medication has changed the life I many kids I know, but it is just a tool, not a solution. Hope this helps!

@elijahsmama1108: I don't have personal experience, but I was a teacher, so I understand that this is a super tough situation! I'm sorry you have to worry about this. Does your son's school have a counselor he could meet with a few times a week? If you ask to have a meeting with his principal, they should be able to introduce you to the counselor, and set your son up with some behavioral counseling. The counselor might have some tips and tricks that can help your son better understand and express his feelings.

@Mrs. Twine: Thank you that would be amazing. My sister (Maisy May) passed along your information to me yesterday, but I am guessing I wrote your email address down wrong. I would love to speak with you and learn about your experience.

I am SO sorry I didn't see this sooner! My daughter, Ellie, is 6 and in first grade. She has been diagnosed with ADHD as well as being on the Autism spectrum. She has been aggressive with peers (this behavior has only been present since last year, so Kindergarten), but is more typically aggressive at home. I'd be happy to give you my contact information-- I am an oddball of a writer who gets really impatient with typing, so I do better by phone. My train of thought is an express, apparently. The most helpful thing for us so far has been getting connected with a parent support group (NAMI has chapters all over, and their support groups can be very helpful) and getting a social worker assigned to us. Having a social worker can sound scary, or might make you think of "being under investigation," but it's not been our experience at all. She has been such an ally to us in terms of figuring out what our options are, figuring out the financial aspect of things... Please let me know what else you'd like to know and I'll do my best to answer!

First off let me introduce myself. My name is Carrie, I am a mother to a single child a 5 year old boy who has recently diagnosed with ADHD, unfortunately it is extreme ADHD. I am married to my wonderful DH who is not my childs biological father.
Now onto my question: for the parents who have children with extreme or severe ADHD have you ever came across your child being mean to other children at school? My LO has been hitting, punching and even has kicked a classmate in the face. When we ask him why he hit the other child his response is always he was trying to get their attention. We, as well as his teachers have all explained many times that he does not hit or kick to get another persons attention that you tap them on the shoulder gently and say you would like to talk to them. He is in Kindergarten and unfortunately I do not feel that the school is taking it as seriously as they should. They just take a break away or something similar. My dilemma is that he is significantly larger than his classmates and that he could seriously injure another child if his actions are not taken seriously enough.
I have been considering putting him on medication for his ADHD to see if it would help him, but I have ran into the problem of his insurance as well as the state insurance does not cover his current prescription, and they do not cover psychiatric treatment and I unfortunately can not afford to pay for that treatment myself. What suggestions do you have?
