@Synchronicity: @PawPrints: Just wanted to update that all of the pets have gotten along so far! We did take our dog outside to meet him then brought them back in together. Our cat is still kind of reserved but he's getting better. Also, the pug has had zero accidents, is super well behaved, and the vet said he looks totally healthy! So far, so good!

Thanks for the advice! I have no idea what level of house training he already has but I guess we'll find out tomorrow! The vet is also going to check for any medical issues like a UTI.

Neutral ground - ditto. Take the dogs both outside to the sidewalk or a parking lot and introduce them slowly on-leash until they are used to each other a little bit, then walk them inside together.

We had to housetrain a 1-year-old dog and it was very similar to housetraining a puppy. He had to stay in his crate whenever we were away from the house or when we were sleeping. It took quite a while before we could trust him to roam the house at night and not pee on the carpet, but he figured it out eventually.

I've always heard that it's good to introduce dogs on neutral ground, if you're unsure of how they might react. No experience with cats, though!

It will likely help that you have a trained dog already when it comes to housetraining. I guess what you do will completely depend on what level of training the dog already has? Sometimes it's best to start from the ground up with trips outside every couple of hours or so, until you figure out their cues.

I obviously don't know the situation but  to you for taking the dog in!

We're taking in an older dog on Friday, totally unplanned. We had originally wanted to wait until we no longer had our current pets to get a new animal so we wouldn't stress them out but it's an unexpected thing (I don't want to go into all the specifics). We currently have a 10 year old dog and a 9 year old cat. I have absolutely no idea how they're going to react to a new animal in the house (the new dog is almost 8 years old). Any advice on making sure this goes as smoothly as possible?

Also, any advice on housetraining an older dog? We have an appointment with the vet on Friday afternoon and they said they would give us some advice on that, too, but if anyone has any advice from experience, it's definitely appreciated!
