@Smurfette: haha yep! L is still trying to grasp how to fork/spoon gets into his mouth without trying to twist his arms/head every which way, but he is getting better. Hands ARE just that much faster.

@.twist.: R holds the fork or spoon and eats with her hands 90% of the time. So annoying she knows how to use both, but I think her hands are faster.

@Corduroy: Yeah the extra dishes will be annoying. I usually heat on our regular plates or bowls and then just drop onto her tray.

@.twist.: I think with the spoon, she often (not always) is not doing it intentionally. Like, it's in her hand, with is out to the side not over the tray, and she just forgets to hold it. Or maybe I'm giving her too much credit. So far I'm just loading the spoon and handing it back to her, but maybe if she can help load it that will help.

We have these and they have been thrown on the hardwoods too many times. Now she is much better about it.

@Adira: I feel like I just jinxed myself too!

@Foodnerd81: I understand. I wouldn't have done it myself but we reheat in glass and transfer to plastic. At some point I realized that I had been forgetting to transfer the food to plastic.

We had this problem. He's a big thrower/dumper too so I have wondered how to go about introducing these things.

I started off with a plastic bowl and plate (I honestly don't think it matters what kind). He tossed them for a few days and I decided he wasn't ready for them yet, so I stopped and gave it another week of just tray food.

Then I gave him back the plate. I put something in it that I knew he would like and gave him a fork. He didn't toss it.

So I tried again with a bowl and same thing, didn't toss it.

Now, I always give him a fork or spoon and he will eat out of it with either the utensil or his hands. I have noticed when he's "done" he will start testing gravity. ;) So I say "all done!" and take away the plate/bowl.

Now, if I notice he's starting to play more than eat, I ask if he's all done and he will say "done" and hand me the bowl.

Good luck! :goodluck:

ETA: sometimes I help him with the fork/spoon. I will hold his hand around it and get food on it and then he will put it to his mouth. It seems to have stopped the fork/spoon tosses.

@Adira: Oh yeah, forgot to mention the utensils also get tossed. She wants to feed herself but after she empties the spoon and chews it for a minute, it's like she forgets to hold onto it and off it goes. She actually IS getting a little better at that one.

I use the replay plates. They're seriously indestructible and they come in a set of 3. Or if you want something quieter, you can get the oogaa plates. They're silicone.

@Corduroy: I've heard that-- heavy is better- but there is just no way I am trusting her not to break things. Catch 22 I guess.

My kid is a food thrower too, but generally doesn't throw his plates or bowls. He'll just throw whatever's on/in them still!

We use the OXO plates and have just little plastic bowls (that have covers) for him. He'll throw utensils though, but so far the plates/bowls don't get thrown overboard! Yet... I've totally just jinxed myself.

My LO isn't as much of a thrower but we've had actually had more luck with glass and ceramic dishes than with plastic. She always throws plastic but so far she hasn't tossed a real dish or cup.

My kid is a food thrower. Doesn't like something? Tossed off the high chair tray. Does like something but feels like testing gravity? Tossed. Had enough milk or water from her straw cup for *right this second even though she will want more in 20 seconds*? Tossed over the side. So... yeah, meal time is messy.

I'm trying to work on this, mostly by ignoring it (not working) and watching when she looks like she might throw something and taking it first. I usually just put her food directly on the tray, but I am thinking I should start introducing a plate or bowl at some point. Any recommendations for plates or bowls that work for throwers? Obviously, it must be unbreakable, but would heavier make her less likely to play with it, or just more likely to put yet another ding in my hardwood floor? Also, the tray on her highchair is pretty small (it's a chicco 360 hook on chair) so the plate or bowl much be small.

Recommendations welcome! Also, any tips to reduce the throwing and dropping would be cool too. :)
