@nugget16: it sounds like you know what you are doing! Obviously if she shows hunger signs you give her more, but it sounds like you are giving her enough. Prunes are the wonder fruit!!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: she eats it like she's been doing it her whole life--like a champ!! Still a happy, sleeping baby! Started showing some signs of constipation but I think I over did the bananas so we are doing some prunes today. I feel like if the Dr said as little as 15 oz of formula is enough (combined with a jar of food a day), then I'm in the clear. Of course, if she ever started acting hungrier, I'd definitely offer more. However, yesterday I did offer more, just to see if it was necessary, and she spit up over 20 times when the previous days we were under 8 times a day ( Big difference from when we were not using solids and she was spitting up 40 to 50 times a day).

@nugget16: based on her pre-solids intake that number doesn't seem too far off. Is she eating her solids well meaning more in her mouth than on her face?

When we introduced solids LO was maxed out with how much formula we could offer in a day. We continued to offer him the same amount in his bottles, but he left about 3-4 oz total a day. After two weeks we adjusted to his new normal. At 8 months and getting 22 oz of solids/ day he drinks 20-24 oz of milk.

In my experience and from reading, that number seems low. I also feel that solids mainly complement formula/BM. not replace it - especially that quickly.

However, if tour daughters sleep and body weight stays ok, and your drs are ok, that would be my main concern. You will need to start added more calories overall though once she starts crawling.

At 5.5 months the formula intake seems low. Since their primary nutrition is supposed to be from formula/breast milk I would try to stick to close to what she used to take and lower her solid intake a little.

It seems a little low to me, but my 6 month old is big for his age. He eats @34-36 oz a day plus one serving of solids. He is 23lbs though.

My doctor reminded me that first foods are lower calorie than milk, so you want to avoid a big drop in ounces. I might aim for 20-23 ounces with one jar of food.

@alphagam84: before introducing solids, she was only taking 22-25 oz of just formula in 12 hours. She's an amazing sleeper so she does lose some because of that. She's still growing (14.5 lbs and 25") but is petite, just as I am. I wish she would take more but the spitting up increases when we do and I think she is over fed. She loves to eat and I don't think she always stops when she's full 😜

16-18 ounces of formula seems a little on the low side compared to what my daughter drank at that age but all babies differ!

Our pediatrician and GI Dr have given us the go ahead to introduce solids to our 5.5 mo old. She has loved everything we have given her so far. She has been deemed s "happy spitter" and this was added to hopefully help with that--which we have seen a decrease in the spitting up. The drs. have said we can give it to her 3-4 times a day along with reducing her formula. For the last few days we have given her one jar of baby food and 16-18 oz of formula throughout the day (6:30am-6:30 pm--she sleeps through the night without feedings). I just wanted to see what others thought on the amount of nourishment she is getting. Still having 5-6 wet diapers and 1-2 diapers a day. Thanks!
