@littlek: Except he'll try to feed Xander solids before I nurse him and probably once he IS eating the solids, he'll decrease how much BM he has, which is exactly what I want to avoid!

@oliviaoblivia: haha, true!!! Although at least that would give him a reason to have to stay in touch with me when he's older! Plus I like my nursing boobs - so much bigger than my normal boobs. :)

@littlek: Right, he's 6.5 months, so there's no real URGENCY to get him to eat solids yet! I'm just trying to balance his needs/wants with compromising with Hubs, who is very insistent that we need to get him eating solids!

@Adira: He's only 6 months, right? That's young. I would not worry about it. I'd give it a day or two break and then try again. Food at this stage is just fun, he's getting his calories from milk. Try not to stress, it will come in time.

I would offer, and if he refuses then just leave it at that. He is still so young, and not all babies take to solids right away. Mine never like bananas or applesauce but loved the cereals.

I would try making it a little thicker too and not as runny.

Maybe at dinner just try putting some finger foods on his tray and see what he does. I know Isaac really likes holding a spoon while I feed him. Sometimes it goes in hi mouth, sometimes he swings it around.

I would keep making small quantities of the cereal and offer. Try different temps and thicknesses.

@scg00387: Well, I'd like to let him just eat my food if he's interested, but is it wise if it's some sort of mix? Like he was grabbing at my casserole the other day and I wasn't really sure I should let him have pasta and cheese, etc as one of his first meals? And then he was grabbing at a Reese's bar I was eating, haha. So I figure I shouldn't really let him try those things yet, right??

@Adira: that is what I would personally do if I were you. If he grabs at your food when you're eating, I would let him have it and play with it. I am of the mind that babies being introduced to food should be low pressure and fun. I think most indicate when they're ready to actually eat vs play and when they're ready to eat more finger foods than mashes or purees if they're given both. I don't think you can go wrong listening to your baby in situations like these.

Again, you have zero to lose by taking a break.. He is young it's not like two weeks relaxing on the issue is going to destine him to never chewing a solid meal. I know from familial experience pushing foods or withholding finger foods can lead to babies dreading meal time and refusing all together. Fortunately there are OTs who focus on mealtime issues - but I'm guessing most babies come around on their own.

@Adira: Some of the moms at my play group say they have to heat everything. Their babies won't take purees (or anything) at room temp! I don't have any experience or advice to share, but thought maybe you might like to try that :)

@hilsy85: Okay, thanks!

@Smurfette: I did warm it to room temperature, so it wasn't cold, but maybe I'll try warming it a little more - it might've still been a little cool. And I know! If introducing solids is my one issue with Xander, I'm a lucky lady!!!

@locavore_mama: I'm actually wondering if maybe he wants to feed himself too, although when I was trying with the pears, I just put some on the spoon and gave him the spoon to play with. Some ended up in his mouth and he totally started gagging and freaking out, so... not sure! But I'm going to try a banana and let him just play with it and see what happens! I'll also try to continue offering the rice cereal, but try not to put any pressure on it. And maybe if we just continue eating family dinners together with him there, he'll eventually figure it out.

@scg00387: Oh, you think I should just stop offering altogether until he's 7 months? I guess I thought I should keep offering in case he becomes interested and wants to try it? I mean, when I sit with him at dinner, he grabs at my food, though maybe that's just because it's something in front of him? Bleh!

I do have a pediatrician appointment on Friday, so I'll ask her opinion then and maybe see what she thinks I should do!

@Adira: just keep offering. I am trying to get my LO to eat non puréed foods. She just pushes things around on her tray (or mushes them in her hands) and then throws them over the side of her high chair. My Ped said just keep offering, and eventually she will eat the food instead of just moving it around.

I have already chimed in on your several other threads but I would just stop offering. I don't know how he could be any clearer that he is not interested or ready. There are zero reasons to push it this young if he is happy and healthy if he is not having fun nor eating. If you stop offering for two weeks and try again once he is 7 months what is the harm? It's a developmental thing like anything else.

@Adira: yea, exactly. I would offer him the spoon once and if his mouth is closed then leave it at that and try again the next night or in a few days.
Also when it was a particular food that LO did not like the first time I offered I tried again in a few weeks. Like she hated bananas the first few times I offered it. Finally she liked it and now it's one of her favorites! She also generally likes it when I offer the whole banana in lieu of chunks. So maybe he wants to feed himself?? Don't know just grasping at straws :)

I think it's normal for kids to make faces of disgust or "wtf" when they taste food for the first time...I would just keep trying, but like you said, with no pressure--if he turns his head away, then that's it. If he's just making faces, then maybe try another taste.

But I've also hear what @MsLipGloss: is saying that it can take a lot of time before your kid actually likes it! So I'm not sure how to find the balance? I guess just keep offering it, but not trying to make him eat it? Like if he opens his mouth, put it in, but if he refuses, don't? I don't really know!

If he doesn't like it, take a break. DS wasnt interested in eating until he was 7+ months old. Now he eats like a champ!
He wasnt thrilled with the purées I made him, so I tried pouches and he loved them. Then I started copying the combos he liked and now he loves the purées I make too.

Food before one is just for fun! It doesn't really matter if he eats it, his nutritional needs are met by BM/formula. You just want to expose him to the different textures of food and the act of eating.

@littlek: I haven't tried mixing yet - I figured if he wasn't going to eat the rice cereal that was MOSTLY BM, then he probably wouldn't want any other flavors in it? But who knows! I clearly have no idea what I'm doing.

@hilsy85: haha, I went with rice because I figured it was the most BLAND and so it would taste MOSTLY like BM and he'd be more likely to eat it! Do you think that's maybe not the case? And I'll definitely try giving him chunks of food and see what happens.

@edelweiss: That's definitely encouraging to hear that some kids aren't interested until later. Everyone around me seems to be acting like there's some huge rush to get him into solids and that if we don't get him eating solids now, he's going to want to nurse for the rest of his life! They're stressing me out!

And I did try pears since sweet potato was a bust, but he hated that too!
