@Bubbles: yes, we completely just play it by ear and trust her for hunger cues :). Glad to hear it went well!

Yes we have just started on solids, but doing BLW so at this stage very little is getting swallowed - most ends up in hair, down front etc!

Are you giving baby solids? FWIW, that alone might give you more flexibility with nursing.

I ended up mixing 2oz formula with 2oz BM as that was all I could pump, and he knocked it back like a pro!

@Strawberrybee: he had taken the occasional bottle of EBM before, although tbh he has never before drank as much milk as 4oz in one sitting! How do you find it works with knowing how much formula to give, as you can't tell how much they're taking when BF? Do you just let the baby lead and drink til they've had enough?

We just jumped in with one of the samples we had been given at around 7 months, and she took it no problem! At 10 months we're still doing a combination of bfing, bottle feeding formula, and now solids. What worked for her was enfamil infant.

Has he ever had a bottle before? That might be a bigger issue for you than what's in it. Also, make sure you're not the one giving it to him, as he'll probably prefer you to it and kick up a fuss ;)

mix it! :) I bet he won't mind at all :) I find babies that age are happy with anything that goes in their bellies :)

Thank you so much - I am hoping he won't mind the taste too much! I give him probiotics which taste pretty funky and he happily laps them up - but I guess he may not be so impressed by a whole bottle of it. But gradual mixing sounds a good way to go - just gotta try and get ahead with pumping so I have enough to mix

Id definitely mix it. I'd imagine it works pretty much like weaning a FF baby onto whole milk.

Start small. Say he takes a 4oz bottle. Do an oz of formula and 3 oz of BM. Do that for a couple days. If he does okay then increase gradually by .5-1oz at a time until the bottle is all formula.

The main issue would just be getting him used to the taste. Not gonna lie, formula does NOT taste good. lol. I had to drink some at airport security once and flat out gagged.

Advice on formula needed bees!

My DS is 6 months old next week, and has been EBF. I suspected he may be intolerant to dairy during his younger colicky days, so I cut it out around 8 weeks and haven't touched it since.

Anyway I am at the stage where I'd like to introduce a bit of formula into his life. I'll still carry on breastfeeding for as long as it's working for both of us, but I'd like a bit more flexibility - and I can't pump much as he guzzles everything I've got going! I've been giving him a few spoons of yoghurt each day for the last few days to see if dairy really is a problem, and I've noticed no reaction.

Even if as it seems he is fine with dairy, I'm a bit wary of how his tummy might react to suddenly introducing formula? I'm probably only looking at a max of 1 bottle per day at this stage, and ideally don't want to use a dairy free formula as I've heard taste can be an issue! But curious as to how did others made this transition - just give them a bottle and see what happens? Or mix it with some BM at first? And how did your LOs react to starting on it? I can't seem to find much info online about introducing a bit of formula to an older baby.

Thank you!!
