@looch: Hmm, you may be right.

@erinbaderin: DS used to be 200% into LEGO, but I think it hits a wall as he can build everything all on his own as long as he has the instructions coming out from the box (I always joke he has a bright career building furniture at IKEA). He hasn't really CREATE anything on his own that is really substantial yet, and I think he is frustrated because there were no one giving him pointers and no inspiration. Therefore I want to enroll him to 1 week of LEGO camp to hopefully inspire him again. To us, LEGO develops creativity and engineering / problem-solving. I am a designer and DH is an engineer. So we do value LEGOs.

The reason I wanted to introduce him to Star Wars is because the one LEGO camp that matches our schedule is a Star Wars LEGO camp, which he said no immediately as soon as he sees Star Wars. To him Star Wars is "scary" even though he knew nothing about it. Hence I want to introduce him to it not via the "scary" movies. Hopefully if he knew what it is about then he'd be excited about the camp and know what things are when they are building them. That's all.

Now that I talked to DH a bit more, he said we could enroll him in the Minecraft LEGO camp, which, again, we all know nothing about (haha, y'all must think we live in a cave lol). DH pointed out that all models are prebuilt in Star Wars, but Minecraft you are more free to design your own space. So maybe indeed I don't have to make the books work as now I realize they are really different from how Harry Potter is. I may still borrow some of the books mentioned here if I could find them via the library, and see if DS is interested to read them on his own.

@Mrs. Pickle: Thank you for all the info!!

I’m a huge SW fan. It’s one of my favorite things. The movies are the best way to introduce someone to the universe. The books build on the movies. When Disney bought the rights to Star Wars they decided all the books published prior to them were not cannon. There have been a few books published since. The Ahsoka book is young adult, but for teens. You do risk spoiling the movies by reading the books. The Clone Wars cartoon and Star Wars Rebels are both kids shows that might not be scary. Really though I would wait until he’s interested and show him A New Hope again.

B is five, and has never seen Star Wars, but he’s picked up enough stuff at school that he has a general idea - he talks about Kylo Ren, he knows about Stormtroopers and Darth Vader (although the other day he told me that Kylo Ren is Darth Vader’s grandfather), etc. So I don’t think he has to have seen it at a young age to pick stuff up about it. I especially think he doesn’t need to be super familiar with the Star Wars universe for a LEGO summer camp.

That being said, if your son isn’t that into LEGO or Star Wars, why are you pushing Star Wars LEGO camp?

My husband and I know nothing about SW, and neither does my son, but honestly, I don't think we're missing out on a big piece of pop culture in the US...if he's not interested, he's not interested. There are so many other things to explore. Why not let him decide?

Thank you so much all! I will check them out!

I just assume all kids all watch the Star Wars movies (at least 1 or 2 of them) when they were really young! My DS is super sensitive and he was traumatized even watching Finding Dory a few years back lol. He just successfully watched the first movie (The Grinch) in the movie theater a few months ago without crying and being traumatized and having to leave. I think to him, it isn't the concept that is scary, it is how dark the movie is (literally, color-wise) and the imagery, I think.

@Sams Mom: How about chapter books -- are they even kid friendly / well written / worth reading ? If they are OK which one(s) would your friend recommend to start with?

There are literally thousands of Star Wars books. Graphic novels, leveled readers, chapter books, choose-your-own-adventure. Just head to the section of your local library that has the type/level of book he normally likes and you should find tons of options.

That said, if he says Star Wars is too scary for him, I would respect that. At 7, I don't think he is missing out on anything by not having this cultural reference. If it's really important to you, there are picture books to introduce some of the characters without any of the war/violence/etc.

My LO (3) knows who many of the original characters are, and can hum the Imperial March, but she won't see any of the films for a long time.

But I haven’t seen any of the movies and know nothing about it. Same with my brother. I do not feel like I’m missing out on a big part of life. My husband likes it and has seen them all. If he doesn’t like it, I wouldn’t worry about it.

ETA: there’s tons of lego Star Wars books. And we even got some of those Little Golden Books. I am a Jedi, I am Darth Mal. From the dolar store.

This may be completely not doable but I need advice from this knowledgable community!

DS is a 7 yo boy and we are not Star Wars fans. To be honest I don't think I ever finished a whole film without walking away or falling asleep :meh: . DH attempted to introduce DS to the basic Star Wars world by inviting him to watch Star Wars with him, which DS always declined claiming "it is too scary". So in a way, he missed out on quite a lot of references for the past few years. For example, he first learned what a Jedi means / is when he went to a classmate's Jedi training birthday party 2 years ago.

No big deal right? But I'd hate it if he continue to miss things out as this is a big part of the US pop culture. He used to love LEGOs a lot, recently it died down a little, so I want to sign him up on a LEGO summer camp for a week to hopefully bring back up the interest. Our school offers a Star Wars LEGO camp which he didn't want to go because of, well, Star Wars.

I am thinking, can I even contemplate introducing him to Star Wars through reading? We have just started reading Harry Potter in November (I read to him at bedtime -- the real chapter books with no pictures, not the illustrated versions or comics), and it was a major success! We finished reading the first book a few weeks ago, watched the first movie, and DS insisted to start with the 2nd one. If I were to introduce him to Harry Potter via the movies he definitely would not have been interested. So I started looking up Star Wars books. Apparently the film is not based on books, and I read that it was ghost-written by Alan Dean Foster after the movies were in production. Did any of you ever read the Star Wars book and if so, was it even friendly to 7 yo kids? If this is a doable concept, where would you recommend me to start to introduce the most basic interest of Star Wars to DS? Which chapter book should I start with? (is that even how it works?)

Thank you so much in advance!
