Right now she plays with the sippy cup and chews on the end. I put some really cold water in, and it helps her teething pain. Occasionally she will drink it, and she likes to drink from DH's water glass (he tips it up to her mouth).
I don't think water is really needed much at this age though.

I don't think he really needs the water at that age. I agree with @scg00387: just let him try it out. DS LOVED to imitate us, he thought he was such a big boy drinking out of a cup like mama and papa when he was under a year.

We only gave DS water in an open cup or sips out of our water bottles. We ended up never using a sippy at all and he could drink fairly well out of an open cup by 14 months.

@Grace: That's what I was going to say. We aimed for 1 oz at each meal but so long as there were no GI issues we didn't worry about it. Sometimes it just takes awhile to get used to things. I agree with trying some different delivery methods just for fun and practice.

My understanding is that offering water is to help prevent constipation with the solid foods. So if poops are fine, I wouldn't worry too much.

@Mrs. Chipmunk: I dip my straw into the water and let the water fill the straw up to a certain level then I put my finger over the top to seal the pressure.

I just filled a sippy cup and let him play with it at meal times. I know he's not going to actually drink much from it right now. I'm not worried about his hydration, I just want him to get use to a sippy cup. :)

We started straight with the straw cup at 6 months. She drinks a little but mostly lets it dribble out of her mouth. She thinks it's fun though. She still get lots of fluid from nursing so I don't really pay attention to her water intake.

I would just let him play and explore. He doesn't actually need the water. My son didn't start drinking more than a sip until he dropped nursing session.

I would try a straw cup. R still doesn't get a sippy cup and can only do a straw cup. At that age I wouldn't worry about how much he is getting, more for him to learn how to use it.

DD only became interested in drinking water with her meals in the last two months (so around 12 months). Before that, she always had a cup and never really drank it. They don't NEED water yet when they're getting milk/formula.

They don't NEED the water at this age. I started LO with a straw cup at 5.5 months, it took her about a month to "get it" and now she has about an ounce or two of water with every meal at 8.5 months.

We give G a full sippy cup with dinner, and allow her to have 2-4 oz of it. It being full makes it easier for her to drink, but I don't want it to take the place of her formula, so I usually take it away when it's half gone.

Xander didn't really get how to use a sippy cup, but eventually figured out how to use a straw cup (Zoli). Originally he'd drink about 1-2 oz of water with a meal, but now at 11 months, he pretty much drinks nothing with meals, so we keep his water cup out with his toys so he can drink throughout the day instead.

Also, in the beginning, he would just let the water dribble out of his mouth too, but he eventually learned how to actually drink it. I think the hardest part is them figuring out how to get the water from the cup into their mouth, so if he knows how to do that, he'll eventually figure out how to actually drink it. So I would just keep offering it to him with his meals, but try not to worry too much if he doesn't drink a lot. Since he's still getting plenty of fluids elsewhere, it's not super crucial for him to drink a lot of water at this point!

We started with a straw cup around six months. I'd give her a couple ounces every so often. It was more fun for her in the beginning and not so much drinking. I'd offer more on hot days (she was six months in July).
Now at 13 months I just leave a few straw cups with fresh water around.

I introduced the sippy cup to DS when he started eating solids. He would suck on it, water would come out, but then dribble out of his mouth. He didn't understand he needed to drink it. I've tried a few times and he doesn't seem interested in the sippy cup/water. Last night while eating out with some friends, I fed him some water through my straw (put my finger over one end of the straw and release the air once the straw was in DS's mouth). He drank the water just fine!

Do you think it's a sippy cup thing and that's why he doesn't drink it? Should I try another sippy cup? How much water does your LO drink when they were 6/7 months? Is it okay he doesn't drink water after a meal? He still gets his milk in between solid meals.
