I would start offering it in addition to nursing, not in replacement, unless you want to try dropping sessions (and even then, I tried to do that but LO hated WCM and wouldn't take it, so we just dropped sessions and didn't replace them with anything).

Honestly, I stressed so much about the transition and I really didn't need to. Next time I will just offer it with meals, and not worry about trying to replace nursing sessions with it, since that didn't work for me, and then I feel like they end up drinking a lot more milk, which you don't necessarily want.

When we first started offering milk we gave it as a snack in the afternoon, not to replace a nursing session. once we knew she liked it, we would offer it before bed if I was gone and sometimes as an afternoon snack. she still nurses a lot at almost 16 months, and gets cow's milk once a day (about 8 ounces if she is at daycare, which happens 3 times a week, and only a few ounces as a snack if she is home with me).
It works well if I'm gone to just give her a cup of milk before bed, which has given us some nice flexibility.

@Foodnerd81: no it's the opposite. All the papers from my pediatrician's office emphasized this - don't offer WCM by itself. You offer WCM WITH meals so it's part of their normal food intake. They eat food and drink milk. If you offer milk alone they are likely going to drink the entire thing and get all their calories from WCM and will eat less at meal time.

We just offered her a cup of WCM with her meals 3 times a day. She hated it so we started off 90% milk and mostly water and slowly increased over a few weeks. Now she loves milk. We didn't purposefully wean but we started doing meals meals first and then nursing. She pretty much self weaned by 14 months.

@septca: ah ok. I think I also need to start offering her more water throughout the day, not just at meal times. Thanks.

@Foodnerd81: we offer both. But my DD drinks a TON of water throughout the day, so sometimes I just offer milk with meals.

@Foodnerd81: I don't think that will be a problem at this age (as long as your LO is used to food) or at the beginning - it will likely take a while to build interest and then you can start offering WCM apart from meals if you are away.

@cmomma17: @septca: I thought you weren't supposed to offer it with meals because you don't want to take away from the actual food (like she would eat less if she was filling up on milk)?

Juts start offering it. We started by giving DD a straw cup with a bit of cold WCM at meals. At first she was confused, but she gradually got used to it and started drinking more. She's 18 mo now and still only gets WCM with meals. She drinks about 6 oz a day, which isn't much, but it's absolutely fine, nutrition-wise.

@Foodnerd81: We started out by offering it with meals. So, not as a replacement for nursing per se. Just to see if LO liked the taste/would drink it.

C is over a year old now (what?! How?) and BFing is still going strong. She shows no signs of wanting to drop any sessions and I'm happy to continue for a while, so I don't expect to wean for at least a few more months. But, I feel like it would be good for her to be introduced to cow's milk so she can get used to it, plus I'd like to be able to be away from her without worrying about pumping or frozen BM for her.

We normally nurse 4 times a day. I have skipped a feeding entirely and felt fine, but we gave her frozen milk while I was out. Is it possible to just give her a cup of cow's milk instead of nursing? How do I do this? We have her one year appt with the ped next week but they haven't been super helpful with specific questions like this. I'm a SAHM so don't have to worry about pumping milk for her during the day or whatever.

Oh, and she has had milk IN things (like, in scrambled eggs or pancakes) just not to drink, so I'm not concerned about an intolerance, though I'd want to start slow anyway I guess?
