@Mrs Green Grass: +1. why does your LO have zero iron?
My LO had really low iron at 9 months and was almost admitted to the hospital.
Anyway, another tip is cooking with a cast iron and dark leafy greens!

@Applesandbananas: We use a pediatric iron chew - grape flavored that we crush up and give to LO from a spoon.

He has iron deficiency anemia that we caught right around his 1 yr appt so we give him 2.5 tablets a day total. They told us to do the poly-vi-sol which he took the first time we gave it to him without problems but then refused/spit out every time after that. At our appt w/ his hematologist I asked about other options for iron supplements and the pharmacist was very helpful in coming up with other options! There are grape flavored drops that they could have special ordered for us but they had the tablets so we gave them a try and he LOVES it - I tried it too - they taste like grape pixie-stix sort of (way better then the poly-vi-sol)

We figured that if we were going to have to give him iron twice a day for a few months it might as well not be a struggle!!!

@Adira: I wish. LO hates the baby cereal and being spoon fed in general :(

@Greentea: I'll check it out, thanks!

@Revel: a powder sounds like a good solution!

@Mrs Green Grass: thanks for sharing your research! After googling iron rich foods, it's a no-brainer why LO was lacking... He hates most of the stuff on the list :(

We tried poly-vi-sol again today and he didn't throw it up. He chugged half of a sippy of very diluted apple juice afterwards and seemed fine. That was a first! I think checking out some of these other options might be a good idea. Thanks for the suggestions!

You might also keep trying on the poly vi sol - my LO refused it at first, then we started mixing it in a couple tablespoons of OJ and giving it in a shot glass, and now he'll take it by itself. It took a few weeks to get there, though.

@Mrs Green Grass: it's worked out well for us. It's kind of a pain because it comes in packets that have to be split in half for our LO, but that may just be up to one year. It is more expensive than poly vi Sol, but I like that it is supposed to be.more naturally derived and that it tells you the exact amount of each vitamin in each dose. I think poly vi only shows % of daily value, which I always thought was strange.

We've been giving a rainbow light multivitamin powder with iron that mixes into food or beverage to LO since her iron was borderline low at her 9 month check up. You can kind of taste it when we mix it in applesauce but it's not bad and she doesn't seem to mind it. I bought it on Amazon.

My lo has ZERO iron. Poly-vi-sol is best because it also has Vitamin C which helps the iron actually get absorbed, but you can also buy Ferrous Sulfate and give it in OJ.

FYI...dairy inhibits the absorption of iron, so don't give it at the same time. Vit C increases absorption by 300%!

I've been doing tons of research...Also heme iron from mostly red meats is absorbed pretty easily, but non-heme (from plants and beans) is not. Many children's foods are fortified with iron. 3/4 cup of cheerios has 50% of the daily value. BUT...it's really hard to catch up with food alone if there is a lack of iron, so the drops are pretty impt.

@Applesandbananas: novaferrum. I researched and found that brand and lo loves it! I sound like an ad but I love it too because it doesn't have sugar or other additives. It's on amazon :)

Our ped suggested we give our LO poly-vi-sol with iron because his hemoglobin was a little low at his one year check up. We had used poly-vi-sol in the beginning but LO haaaaates it. He throws it up and screams.

Any suggestions for an alternative iron supplement?
