Thanks all! I appreciate the responses and support. I hope we can all get answers and solutions to our issues. So frustrating!

I know I have a fibroid and an ovarian cyst (that has been resolving on its own), but my OB doesn’t think either the fibroid or cyst are the cause of the bleeding (due to type and location). I suspect it’s hormonal since I’ve also been breaking out more than usual, and my doctors have suspected thyroid issues in the past (for other symptoms), so hopefully I can get some clarification soon. The unpredictable bleeding has been really frustrating and I’m tired of going through testing for it. I had a rough postpartum with my second daughter, so I’m sick of being poked and prodded in my nether regions at this point!

I'm in the same boat and have been for a few years. Birth control pills worked great for me for years. Was fine while trying to conceive, had an unremarkable pregnancy. Since I got my period back, I've had shorter cycles with spotting before my period and mid-cycle spotting. Although it's all pretty light flow, it works out to having spotting or bleeding almost half of the time and is annoying.

I had blood work, ultrasound, endometrial biopsy and hysteroscopy. All totally normal, so it is clearly some unexplained hormonal issue. I have my annual exam next month and I think I'm finally going to do what my doctor suggested and get an IUD.

For what it's worth, my mom, grandfather, and sister all have thyroid issues so I'm pretty convinced that even though my levels are normal, they might be on the fritz...

@castilrm: I'm having sort of similar issues so wanted to commiserate/show my support. I also have 2 kids, and DH recently had a vasectomy so I'm not on birth control. My periods were like Swiss-style clockwork 26-28 days totally normal until after I had my second kid. Since AF came back I've had weird spotting about a week before actual AF comes. I got bloodwork done because my doc suspected thyroid issues, but it came back normal. I'm currently waiting for insurance approval to do an ultrasound to look for cysts. My doc thinks that it's a physical thing going on though she couldn't see/feel anything when she did my pap a few months ago. Hoping we both get answers soon! Keep me posted....

I’ve been having similar issues with irregular periods that are closer together, mine started after removing the Mirena. No midcycle bleeding, though. Don’t underestimate the cysts. I had the uterine biopsy (not fun) and thyroid test (all normal), but at a recent ultrasound a large cyst was found which seems to explain some of my issues. I need to go back in a month or so to see if it’s resolved. Good luck at your appointment.

Long story short, I’ve had an issue with irregular periods for about 10 years. While on various forms of oral birth control, I had spotting mid-cycle. It generally was light and short lived, so while I always mentioned it during OB appts and switched pills occasionally, the general consensus was that the bleeding was caused by hormonal birth control. This seemed to be true bc when I went off it for pregnancy, my cycles were normal during the months we were trying to conceive.

Cut to last year when I got my period again after delivering my second baby. Suddenly I was getting basically two periods a month while on the mini pill. My OB assumes it was caused by hormonal imbalance from pill, pregnancy, breastfeeding, etc. I gave it time to resolve, did ultrasounds (found ovarian cysts but those resolved on their own), and went off the pill a few months ago since husband had a vasectomy.

Overall the midcycle bleeding is better since going off the pill but my cycles have shortened to 21 day cycles and this month I’ve having spotting again. I’m supposed to have an annual exam this week and I’m worried that this ongoing issue is going to result in ongoing testing to figure out what the deal is since my OB mentioned doing another ultrasound (check again for cysts, fibroids) and uterine biopsy if things didn’t completely resolve a few months after going off the pill. I also was going to ask about blood tests to check my thyroid and to see if anything else is off balance.

With so many possible causes to midcycle bleeding and changing cycles, I was just curious if others went through a similar issue and what their various diagnoses were....of course I always focus on the worst ones and scare myself silly.

As an FYI, I’m in my mid 30s so I doubt it’s menopause related....

Thanks all :)
