Kids usually really, really get into imaginative play around 3 anyway. My 5 year old still plays with ours and I imagine she will for at least another 1-2 years more! I have a sibling four years younger than me though, so I often played "down" to her level. My son uses his kitchen at home as a storage shed for his trains, but at daycare, he plays with it properly. They loved it!!! He is really into helping in the kitchen (and lately is surprisingly helpful) and loves pretend play (listening to him from the other room while he is pretending is seriously the best entertainment). Sadly, the reason he is just getting it now is because I couldn't convince my husband to get one until we had a daughter too!
