We just sold our monitor, but it was necessary when we were sleep training, so we could see what was happening without busting into the room.

Our house is pretty tiny- if we're anywhere in the house and she's screaming we can hear here. But I like to have it for when she's just making noises so I know when she's awake. And I've taken it with us while traveling so we don't have to stay in the room with her since she goes to bed so early.

@Mrsbells: Our video monitor is the most awesome piece of baby equipment we own! It brought a lot of peace and comfort to DH and I.

Yeah, I agree that it depends.
However, I will say that I LOVE having a video monitor because it helps me decide when to let DS self-soothe, and when to intervene. There was a short period of time where occasionally he'd get a leg stuck, and that's the kind of thing I'd want to fix right away, vs. seeing if he can self-soothe. Now, I can usually tell when he's just fussing before settling down vs. up for good based on whether he's sitting up or not... if I can see that he's crying but still lying down, he's pretty much always tired enough to get himself back to sleep. If he's sitting up or standing up, I probably need to go get him.

We live in a tiny place (2BR, but the 2nd BR is pretty much our TV room), so we're not getting one either.

ETA My BIL and SIL have the video+sound monitor and they LOVE it. It was a gift so it was "worth it" My SIL said they would have bought a regular sound one, but they got the video one as a gift.

Even in the two story house I lived on before I never used the monitor we got. I was always able to hear her before she started screaming.

I don't think you need one in your case- you will probably hear your baby just fine if you are in the other room during the day. I can hear our boy throughout our entire house during the day just fine.

We got a sound only monitor when we moved our son to his nursery at night instead of the pack and play in our bedroom. I also use it if I am gardening outside and he is sleeping inside- but I don't you'll be in those situations.

I have a one story ranch and can hear DS cry from the entire house. Initially I didn't buy one. However we traveled to my sister's wedding and I kicked myself for not bringing a monitor with us since we were staying in her FI's family's mansion.

I ended up buying one from the second hand store to have at home, for when I have to run out to my car, for when we are traveling on weekends, and just in case. It's also helpful for when DH is home and watching TV, since he puts it right next to him to make sure he hears DS.

I wouldn't buy an expensive one, and I'd only buy a movement monitor if I had a premie or LO with health issues. I think the video monitors are a waste of money too, but I know some moms like to see their LO without going in the room.

I paid like $6 for ours used and it was a great buy.

We didn't get one with Little Jacks since she was either sleeping with us or on us. We might get one now, since we have such a good sleeper!

I don't feel like you would need one in that small of an apartment. We bought one, but we got a cheaper one, so we won't feel bad if we don't use it as much as we thought.

we are looking into getting a baby monitor, I dont know how much we would use it though. we currently live in a one bedroom apartment and the baby's crib is in our room. If I'm in the kitchen or living room, I might not be able to hear the baby but I'm not sure. I was just wondering if anybody decided to not get a monitor at all, or is this considered a must have item
