No, I think you would only end up obsessing over weight and feeding amounts. Sometimes not knowing is a better thing.

We had bf/jaundice issues at first, but had frequent appointments with the pediatrician and lactation consultant meant that he got weighed every other day or so and we monitored things just fine that way.

If you really need one, you can rent them by the week or month from many pumping supply places. You shouldn't need it for very long unless there are bigger issues.

definitely not a must have item. i got one and it was fun to weigh charlie each week to see how much weight he gained. but it was just something that took up space.

if your baby is underweight and you need to monitor how much they're gaining and how much they're taking in a feeding (by weighing before and after a feeding), but it really is totally unnecessary.

We don't have one. If we want to weigh her, DH will stand with her and without her on the scale. Not completely accurate, but oh well.

I didn't even know there's such a thing!
But I will say I'm super paranoid about her not eating enough. The only thing that made me feel better was if she's gaining weight. The other day we put a cookie sheet with a fleece blanket over our scale, reset the scale to 0. Then weighed her it said 10lbs. She was at the doc 2 days later and weighed 10lbs 2oz with only diaper on. So our method was pretty accurate! Hahha

We don't have one. There are several lactation support groups in our area where baby scales are available, so I can always bring her to one of those groups if I'm dying to know her weight. Our hospital actually has a room that's available all day long for nursing and weighing the baby too.

Absolutely not! We did end up getting a scale but that was because my son was failure to thrive at 6 months old. But we used it for 2 weeks and now it just takes up space.

@Sammyfab: I agree, in those early weeks of breast feeding they can be taking as little as 1-2 ounces of milk. Those scales are great, but anything can throw them off (example if their arm is laying on the scale for the pre weight and then laying off to the side for the post weight the ounces may be off).

And they are pretty little. I would say after 6 weeks the baby is big and its hard to get an accurate weight to the ounce for pre/post weights.

I bought a baby scale when we first started breastfeeding at 4 weeks (supply issues) because I felt like LO was eating around the clock and I didn't have enough milk for him. The scale only increased my paranoia so I returned it after 2 days and I definitely don't miss it now!

We did not purchase one but I went to a breast feeding support group twice a week where we would do a pre and post weight.

Honestly, they aren't all that accurate. Im glad I was able to see how much she was taking but I think if I had one at home I would drive myself crazy.

Remember you can always talk to your pediatricians office about stopping by and setting LO on the scale. I know our office let us do that at one point (no appointment, no cost, etc).

Never even heard of them! We could always take LO to the hospital at any time to get weighed though. And when they were worried about her weight, we would weigh ourselves, then get on with her to see how much she weighed.

How important was a baby scale for you? How often did you use it? Do you think it's a "must have" baby item?

We'll be first time parents soon and I'm contemplating on getting one, especially since the plan is to breastfeed. But with all the other items we've already bought, I'm not so sure if it's truly a necessity.
