For five years we have been in a large, one floor apartment with laundry. While I have loved having it easily accessible it is an old set that is so loud - we can't run it when anyone is sleeping.

We are under contract on a two story house and the laundry room is on the second floor with the bedrooms. Thankfully it doesn't share any walls with any of the bedrooms and we will be buying a new (hopefully much quieter) set. I wish it were on the first floor in a dedicated space though. But really even laundry In the basement laundry doesn't bother me.

@Litebrite: ha yes this is me. We live in a ranch and I love having everything close by (ours is a mudroom off the kitchen). But I’m definitely not as good about getting it put away!

Yes! Growing up laundry was on either main floor or in the basement and lugging clothes up and down is the worse. When I rented an apartment on the third floor I only did so because it came with a washer & dryer on the balcony. As a homeowner I have had it next to the master in a split bedrooms ranch and now upstairs on the bedroom level. While it can be noisy if we wash and dry at night LO sleeps through it.

We live in a two floor condo with upstairs (bedroom level laundry) I can’t do laundry while anyone is sleeping because the washing machine spin cycle shakes the upstairs and is loud, even though it isn’t that loud.

And I still end up bringing all the laundry downstairs to fold. I’d much prefer a main floor laundry over our current set up.

Yes, it’s life changing! It makes it so much easier to keep up on laundry as I throw a load in when I’m making dinner, unloading the kids Daycare stuff etc. I think because it’s right there it doesn’t pile up the same way it used to when we had it in the basement.

We have ours in our main bathroom (which is huge) on the main floor of our small house. I like it much better than in the basement even though it's in the bathroom everyone uses. We also have the kid's clothes in a small dresser in the bathroom. It's so easy to fold everything at put it away all at the same time. Our closet is just across the hall. I think the part that makes it awesome is the dresser and the machines all in the same room.

We are house hunting right now and indoor laundry is high on our list. A lot of houses have laundry in the garage. We actually really want second floor laundry up with all the rooms. But a first floor laundry room with a sink near the kitchen also sounds so nice! If it was a house you are going to stay forever in, then I would consider spending the money to move the laundry at some point.

I feel like having a mud room in between the garage and main house with a separate entrance to the backyard, a full bath with shower stall, utility sink, washer/dryer and ironing center would be life changing.

Right now, we have laundry in the slab level, next to the garage. It's a single flight of stairs, which is manageable. I think the real issue is if we stay into our retirement and being able to no longer negotiate the stairs at some point.

yes.

We used to live in a townhome with the laundry on the first floor and I hated doing laundry. Especially when I was pregnant, it was a pain lugging it up and down and with a newborn and all the laundry that she produced, it was not my favorite.

We moved to our new home when said newborn was 2.5 years and now with two more kids and the even more laundry that these kids produce, I cannot imagine lugging all the laundry up and down.

I read some where, the secret to keeping an organized house, do smaller loads of laundry more often. It def helps to do that bc the laundry room is close.

I grew up with basement laundry, and have main floor laundry now, tucked away combined with a butler pantry.

It is nice. I can throw a small item in or check the progress wheneve I want. I don't have to worry about being away from the kids for very long.

Ours is in our basement but we have a chute. That's the game changer as I can't imagine having to lug all the dirty clothes downstairs. I'll be honest, DH does the laundry but it takes him forever to get it done and back upstairs. Mainly b/c we don't go to the basement so it's out of sight, out of mind. That being said, we're going to be finishing our basement next month and will have a nice tv room down there as well as the kids' playroom. Since we'll be down there a lot more, I can see all of us pitching in more often. The one change that we made to make dragging the clothes up the stairs a little easier is that we switched from laundry baskets to the $1 FRAKTA blue Ikea bags. So much easier to carry multiple bags as you can throw them over your shoulder.

That being said, I would LOVE a laundry room on the second floor. We don't have the room to ever do that.

We do not have a basement and our laundry has always been on the main floor. However in our last house we had to go through thget garage to get to the laundry room and I really disliked it. So hot and miserable, it seemed far away and laundry was a much bigger chore. Now it is back right near the kitchen and it’s made such a difference! So nice!

I had it in the my house growing up, but obv I wasn't reaping the benefits. I think it would be awesome to have, but it's not a deal breaker, and not something I'd spend $$ in doing. While it's annoying to go down to the basement and yes, completely forget we have laundry down there, it's really not THAT big of a deal...

We live in a colonial with an unfinished basement, and we have a separate mud room/laundry room off of our kitchen. I can't imagine having our laundry in the basement. I loath lugging the baskets down one flight of stairs let alone two!

What's nice about our laundry room is that there's a door to close it, and I can still hear the chimes through the door to know when laundry is done. I don't know that I'd like having it up on the second floor where our bedrooms are only because I'd worry if the washer would ever leak or overflow, the damage it would cause below it. Right now, if our washer leaked, it's a step down from the kitchen and is on a concrete slab with nothing under it. Our basement doesn't extend over to the laundry room, so it would cause minimal damage if it leaked. And now that DH tiled the floor, it would be even less damage than the indoor/outdoor rug that we had out there previously.

I don't really like our main floor laundry area. It's open to the rest of the house and it would be difficult to wall it off. Which means we can't block out the noise and I can't leave piles of laundry laying around. Growing up our house had a laundry chute to the basement and I would much prefer that setup now.

I'm not a huge fan of our main floor laundry setup- it's kind of loud when it spins and I still have to haul stuff from upstairs where our bedrooms are. One thing that's nice I guess is when I strip my filthy child down I can toss the stuff into the laundry room. I sometimes actually wish it was in the basement.

Our laundry is currently on the main floor and its in the entry way between the garage and kitchen. It is a huge pain to both have to bring laundry up and down and also there are always baskets in one of our main walkways. We're hoping to move the laundry upstairs sometime this year. Depending on where you choose to move it on the main floor I think you could end up giving yourself more of a headache - but I've also never had laundry in a basement (or a house with a basement).

Our laundry is on our top floor, with the bedrooms. I never thought about it before and it wasn't on my wish list or anything but having it upstairs with the bedrooms and bathrooms we use is amazing. I find it easier to do laundry and it is definitely made me realize that bedroom floor laundry is a must for me.

I went from a 3 story townhouse with it in the basement to a one level house with it in between two bedrooms.

I can't imagine doing the amount of laundry I have now with a baby and still having to go up and down all those stairs.

But also, the laundry now is right outside our son's room and he will not nap if the washer or dryer are on. And they're newer machines and not really THAT loud...

My mom has a laundry room on her main floor and it's in the bathroom. I think that's a pretty smart set up. It's out of the way, but not out in the open (ours was in a closet, but we had to take the doors off because they don't make a shallow enough washer and dryer anymore). And in a bathroom, the noise doesn't bother anyone.

We have a small, but properly contained, laundry room on our main level and I do love it. It’s so nice to be able to go in and switch a load over in the middle of doing other things. I intentionally leave the light on in there while loads are going to keep me from leaving a wet load in the washer overnight (we have a window in the door so I see the light before bed). I actually prefer main floor to the floor with the bedrooms- it’s not loud near the kids bedrooms and we are usually on the main floor, so I can switch a load or put a new load in while they are eating or watching tv or whatever I don’t mind carrying the baskets up and down. And I can close the door and guests don’t see my hanging clothes that are drying or the piles of clean clothes in laundry baskets. Plus we have a utility sink in there.

If my choice was between in a half bath that guests use and in a proper laundry room in the basement, I don’t know what I would choose.

And I always fold in front of the tv anyway.

My mom and dad have had it in the basement and on the main level. It was definitely better on the main floor of the house, just because of convenience. They had a laundry chute in our bathroom, which made it easier on my mom (until we had to start doing our own laundry at like 10 or 11). When they had the chute put in my parents actually had the contractor measure our little sister so he could make it too small for us to shove her down it. 🙈

We have it on the main floor of our house, which is nice because I'm not packing laundry up and down the stairs, but I still don't do a very good job of starting on top of the laundry.

@Hypatia: I hate lugging over flowing hampers down the stairs. I just looked it up, and yea pretty easy installation for a handyman.

Now if they can just make those pneumatic tubes they have at the bank drive thru for bringing clean laundry back upstairs I'd be golden.

@Litebrite: Oops, just realized it's spelled chutes! From what I've read, you just need an unobstructed wall between two studs that goes down to the basement. Hallways are good places because there usually aren't wires or plumbing there. It looks like the installation is pretty simple, I bet a handyman could get it done pretty easily (or you could do it yourself if you feel comfortable patching drywall).

I have a friend with a laundry chute, and she says it's awesome. No more nagging kids and the husband to put their clothes in the hamper. Occasionally, she'll find a small toy that was thrown down there, and one time some clothes got stuck midway so they had to dislodge it with a broom handle, but for the most part it seems to work well.

These are great to hear. I didn't even think of the noise factor.

My thinking was that 1st floor laundry would allow us to do loads throughout the week instead of spending a chunk of the weekend at it.

I'll keep the 1st floor laundry room on my wishlist, depending on how much it will actually cost. Alternatively I'm sure a proper laundry room in the basement will still be an upgrade from our current setup.
