I don't have one and I don't miss it. I have a (non-rocking) chair from Ikea in the nursery, but I mostly nurse DD either in bed or on the living room couch.

Personally I'd put a chair in the nursery that is at least comfortable (What use is a chair you won't sit in?), or use the space for something else... but I put practicality over aesthetics (I try to have both lol).

A comfy chair somewhere in your abode is a must-have. I could do without the glider in LO's room. She hated it as a newborn but likes it now for bedtime stories & climbing (at almost 2 years). I never once succeeded at rocking LO to sleep or back to sleep or sleeping in the chair with LO. She was more likely to sleep stationary or on the exercise ball.

I got mine from Craigslist and it is suiting us just fine. I wouldn't be happy if I spent hundred of dollars on it.

I was going to skip it b/c they seem to be either a) ugly or b) expensive. But my friend looked at me in horror when I shared this and talked for awhile about how nice it was to have a comfortable spot for feedings and what not. She convinced me to buy one.

I went to some baby store in hopes of finding a non-hideous looking chair. The upholstered rocking chair was nice and comfortable, but when I sat in the glider, there was no comparison--being able to rest your head back is great.

The reviews on Amazon for the cheapest glider were pretty split, so I went up a little bit, near $200 for glider and ottoman. I also wanted an ottoman with a pull out stool for nursing.

Good luck shopping, and share pictures of what you find! I see a lot of used ones on Craigslist.

I had an armchair of sorts in the early days but once LO and I got the hang of nursing we ditched the chair and sat or lay on the twin bed in her room. For us, a glider would have been a waste of money.

We didn't use it much during the first 6 weeks or so, but now, at 12 weeks, I'm so happy we have one! My DS is not the best napper, but I can get him to stretch out a crappy catnap in our rocking chair. We have one with a high back and large wings (from PBK) and I have taken some good naps in there over the past few weeks

my LO didn't like to be rocked, so our expensive plush glider went unused. I would have preferred a rocking option in the living room and not the nursery anyways since she didn't sleep in her nursery for the longest time. For me, I wish we would have saved our money.

@loki: yea we skimped on everything else. $100 crib from amazon, changing table and dresser from cl that I painted. Bookcase made by fil. I made the curtains and mobile and art. But it's still cute and I am limited in how long I can rock her only by my bladder, not by my butt falling asleep or back hurting. :)

It's more than you want to spend (and cost more than every other thing I bought for the nursery combine) but it's hard to put a price on a happy ass. We visited my parents last month and I had to do without it for 2 days and it was awful lol

@loki: I think you NEED a comfortable place to sit in the nursery. It doesn't have to be a glider but it needs to be someplace you can comfortably feed and hold the baby for a long time. We have a glider in the living room, comfy reclining couch (also in living room) and a bed in the nursery. We only have the bed in there because we already had it and didn't want to get rid of it but t is so nice to have! I used to sit in there to nurse her at night, and now when she wakes up way too early one of us will go in and snuggle with her to get her back to sleep.

And C never really was soothed by the glider. It's a really comfortable chair for me but the only motion that soothed her was bouncing on the damn exercise ball. Oh we had such a love/hate relationship with that ball!

@loki: Sadie is almost 2 now, and we use it every night. We snuggle up in her rocker for story time before bed. :) We picked one from BRU that matched the nursery... I don't even know the brand. It's a sky blue velvet. We were lucky that our parents when it on it together. We wouldn't have been able to afford it otherwise. Do you have a local yard sale page or other Craigslist-type page where you can look? My mom found a super nice one for my SIL on a yard sale facebook page. It was barely used, super plush, and only $150.

Nope, you don't need one. We did fine without it, and the kid didn't care if he was being rocked, as long as he got something to eat :) That said, I had a rocker when I was a girl, and they're sooooo comfy! If you have the room, get one just so you can relax in it!

We didn't have a glider/rocker for the first 8 months of DS's life. That being said, we lived in a tiny one bedroom condo and didn't have the room for it. I fed him on the couch or in our bed. If he was fussy, we bounced him on a yoga ball.

When we bought a house and he got his own room, we put a chair in there and we use it every night to read books before bed. But I don't think it's necessarily better because it rocks. We just need a chair. Now that we're pregnant with #2, we'll get another chair to put in the nursery for nursing.

So, I guess my point is that it all depends on your space and where you plan on nursing. You can definitely get by without one but it's a nice to have.
