@MerryC, I agree. As long as you try to sleep on your side (altho left is preferable) either one is better than nothing.

I think the Internet is such a double edged sword sometimes. Now we have access to info we never would have had before which is great, but now women are going to worry and blame themselves for every movement they make while pregnant. I had no idea the left side was preferable. Getting good sleep is most important, to me right now.

I always slept on my right side and my daughter was fine. I think you should sleep on the right if it is more comfortable. You need your rest.

From what I've read, the reason to sleep on your left side is that a vein could possibly get compressed and cut off blood flow. But if that happens, you naturally shift. So whatever position is most comfortable is fine.

I slept mostly on my back, but slept on both sides too. My grandfather told my mom that she should sleep on her back, so my mom slept on her back with all 3 of us. I'm guessing my grandma did so with all 10 of her kids too.

I honestly don't think it makes a difference how you sleep. Just be as comfortable as you can!

I'm glad you asked this because it's been driving me nuts. I have the best intentions about sleeping on my left side, but I wake up on my right side a million times per night it feels like. My body really doesn't like the left side I guess.

My midwife said either side is really fine, left is best. She even said if you are a back sleeper, just to wedge a pillow under one side of your bum so that there is an angle to your uterus (which in theory increases blood flow). I'm pretty much a side sleeper, but no real preference as to the side, so try to start out on my left.

I have never been a back sleeper, but I do prefer sleeping on my right side. As far as I know, as long as you avoid the back, right is fine, it is just that left is preferable.

both sides are okay, most doctors advise you not to sleep on your back though.

I had the same concern--was just reading about this yesterday and saw this from The American Pregnancy Assoc. (and read it on other sites, too):

"The best sleep position during pregnancy is "SOS" (sleep on side). Even better is to sleep on your left side. Sleeping on your left side will increase the amount of blood and nutrients that reach the placenta and your baby. Keep your legs and knees bent and a pillow between your legs."

So, even though left is best, right is okay, too.

From what I've read, the left side preference is related to easier blood flow, but I think any side sleeping is still more recommended to laying flat on your back. I'm mostly aware of it because I get light headed easily, and laying on your left side is supposed to help the blood return to your head faster. However, you're not laying on your left side all day long - you're standing or sitting, right? So I'd think that unless you're having issues with numbness, swelling, coldness - things that are signs of poor circulation - you should be ok. But doesn't hurt to chat with your OB about it at your next appt.

I try to switch it up and go from sleeping on my left side to right side through out the night.. but when I am trying to sleep on my left side - its usually forced and I am not comfortable. So Ide say I sleep on my right side about 85% of the time.
Since this is my first baby and Ive read the best position is left side, I am worried about this - but I need sleep.
thoughts?
