I think a chef's grilling skills need to reach a threshold level before the equipment starts to make a noticeable difference.

@locavore_mama: I watched for months and then just jumped on the deal when it came along. They have really high resale values.

We have a gas Weber and love it! We've had it for years and still works great. We use it a lot too, so it was worth it for us.

We have a gas Weber since DH read multiple places that they last the longest and worth the extra price. One day we will get a Green Egg and have both.

We inherited an older cheap gas one, and it works perfectly fine! The grates got pretty nasty, but we just put some of those cookie sheet cooler things on top of them to cook on. We have to replace them about once a year, but $10 is much cheaper than $300 to replace the grates!

We just got a Kamado Joe ceramic smoker (similar to the BGEs) which we are loooooving. We still want to have a gas grill too though (quicker for things like burgers and hot dogs)

We didn't get a "cheap" one, but spent about $200. Its my understanding the grates and the burners go out and can cost some money to replace after a few years but its just the nature of a gas grill.

We got a Weber as a housewarming gift from my parents years ago. Everyone on our street pretty much has this mid-range one from Home Depot. It's withstood some bad storms while still performing well. I think it was worth the money. My brother is close to replacing his Weber which he's had close to 10 years. They grill all of the time.

Our first ever grill as a couple was a Fiesta. Haha my in laws got it for us when we moved in together for the first time. We got some good meals out of it. But man, that thing was a POS. Didn't last one year. LOL

Fond memories though.

Allegedly Webers are some of the best, and they have great price points. That's what we have and we love it.
However, I'd LOVE to get my husband a Big Green Egg someday.

My husband loves to BBQ. He is a fan of the charcoal Webers that you can get for like $50 at Home Depot. You don't really need anything fancy to get great BBQ, but it also depends on the features that you want.

We have a super cheap one that we got from our friend. It's so bad. My husband wanted to go out and buy a cheap replacement, but I don't think it's worth it. I don't need a lot of bells and whistles, but would rather pay more for quality and know that if we take care of it, it will last us for awhile.

I'd consider getting a smaller one by a well respected brand instead of a big one by a no-name type brand. We had a Weber Q for a long time and although it was small it was very sturdy and cheap for a Weber. We still use it for camping/tailgating even though we ended up biting the bullet and getting a full sized Weber because DH wanted more grilling space. The Q was perfect for grilling for 2-4 people though.

@sslm: Do you know if you want gas or charcoal? Both can be cheap or expensive, but I would start with making that determination and then figure out how much realistically it will be used and what for?

@locavore_mama: It was a late first pregnancy give-in on my part. We also had at the time a gas grill, a weber kettle charcoal grill and an electric smoker. The only thing that has left our backyard collection is the gas grill.

I told my DH he could have it but it would be the last grill he could ask for in the foreseeable future and I would expect it to get used (reduce our eating out expenses).

What @MamaG: said! We also have a BGE and love it. We will never need to replace it so for me it was worth the high upfront cost. We got ours off Craigslist and paid about 60% of retail.

I agree that you get what you pay for, we went with a gas grill because that's realistically what we have time for and it suits our needs. We got a CharBroil model from Home Depot. We're on our second year and so far, no issues.

I also have pretty strong fire phobias and I was not cool with ash disposal.

We went middle of the road. We use it a fair bit, so decided not to get the cheapest one we could have, but we are by no means BBQ connoisseurs, so we didn't get carried away with a really expensive grill. I'm sure like most things, you get what you pay for!

Depends on what you want. We have a very expensive ceramic grill (Big Green Egg). My husband doesn't like to use gas, this is a charcoal grill/smoker/oven. It should last him a lifetime with proper care.
