@NaturallyCathy: I got "tv burnt out" on maternity leave. I started watching more serious documentaries instead of mindless shows.
Could you teach yourself something new? If you can already knit - what about crocheting, or something else you'd like to do? Baking? Try new recipes, bake bread if you haven't ever done it before ...
Organizing projects usually keep my mind busy and I feel good afterwards. Is there any area in your house you could tackle?

I was also going to suggest an online course to get your brain working.

I get like that for sure. I'm OK at this current moment in my life (2-4 weeks away from having a baby) but I definitely get to a point where I just feel stuck in a mental rut and need some kind of stimulation but can't think of what. @Dandelion: hit the nail on the head-- I don't know if I'm lazy cause I'm bored or bored cause I'm lazy.

Last time I got like this really bad, I decided to train and run a half marathon. I'm glad I did, but I won't do that again, and it doesn't help you since a) the time commitment with two LOs at home would be tough and b) the heat. My god the heat!

I think something that is sort of a big project, that you tackle in parts, would be good, but I'm at a loss of what.

ETA: I should add, I actually am very bored right now, at work, even though I have tons of work do to before I leave for mat leave next week! Which is why I opened the thread in the first place. But I've also experienced the life rut boredom that you describe.

I pick a theme for the week and plan fun activities around our theme. It gets me to turn the tv off and keep the kids busy. This week we are learning about the solar system. Monday we painted some suns, yesterday we made astronauts with their faces in the helmets, today we did chalk drawings including a scale model, tomorrow we are going to the observatory and we made some shirts that look like a galaxy.

It helps me keep my brain busy and helps me not get bored by doing the same thing every day.

I've been feeling this way during nap myself. I'm finally over the first trimester exhaustion/sickness, so I don't want to sit and watch tv the whole time anymore, but I don't know what to do!

I feel the same way. No LO yet, but my husband works weekends/nights and I have pretty much zero friends in this state. That's what I think is missing for me- friends! Maybe plan some play dates with kids and their moms that you like? Or just some girl time with friends?

I have been feeling the need for a challenge to and I think I am going to try one of the online classes that a lot of the big name universities are starting to offer for free. Try looking at http://www.onlinecourses.com/ they have a pretty easy to search site and there are a ton of options.

Do you like baking or cooking? Maybe you could start your own personal challenge like learning to cook a fancy dinner and then host a dinner at the end of the summer with the whole thing from scratch or learn cake decorating. It might be just far enough outside your normal repertoire to challenge you.

Learning a foreign language might be fun too, online classes, maybe find a meetup group you could go to in the evening?

Good luck, I understand the feeling, hopefully we can both find something that works for us!

I took an online course to combat this. I decided I wanted to learn about Montessori methods for the preschool set, so I found a distance learning program and studied in my free time.

I realized I was spending HOURS online and not accomplishing anything material and I got kind of disgusted with myself.

@regberadaisy: Would that I could but it's a black car, leather seats, the temperature never dips down below 68 and quickly heats up to the 90s (today it's 94 outside)... there's just no winning in that situation since the sun starts showing its face at 5:30! By the time the kids wake up at 7:00 it's already miserably humid and just getting hotter by the minute.

Yes...I'm so bored, it's not even funny. I think the weather is contributing to it. I don't know if I'm lazy cause I'm bored or bored cause I'm lazy.

@regberadaisy: I think I'm also TV burnt out. I hate that it seems like it's always on and I know it's not and if it is, it's mostly background but still... I just want something to do!

Maybe I shouldn't say this, as it will jinx things, but for the past few days I've been bored. Restless. I have two kids (4 and 17 months old) who are my full time job in addition to all of the house chores I try to accomplish (dishes, laundry, straightening up, etc.) But... I'm bored. I find myself checking HB almost compulsively just to see if anything's happened yet!

Can't really sew, no where to set up my sewing machine. Could sew by hand, but what? Knitting is a no brainer and keeps my hands busy but my mind just whirrs and whirrs... I'm tired of watching movies/television shows when the kids nap and a book is too relaxing, as silly as that sounds. I want to do something that makes me think, makes me work, and there's just... nothing.

Part of this is the summer heat. With my A/C out on the car, I can't go anywhere. Plus it's sweltering outside. No decent person would be out in this heat. I can't imagine it any hotter here (although I've known it to be hotter). It's just all so... mundane. I'm bored :( As awful as it sounds, I'm just bored.
