Honestly, if you're not eating tons of junk, I think your body will gain what it needs to gain. I didn't weigh myself often last pregnancy (ended up gaining 30 lbs) and I haven't weighed myself this time (almost 13 weeks pregnant). I don't think there's any need to stress!

I'm at the other end and have gained only 5-10 lbs in 26 weeks. I do have a noticable bump though, high and all out front. Aside from my boobs and belly, you wouldn't know I'm pregnant. I eat healthy, small and frequent meals, and am moderately active. I'm not saying this to throw it in your face, but just to say that our bodies all handle pregnancy in different ways. I was worried that I wasn't gaining enough, but my doc isn't concerned with my lower than average (key word there) weight gain, and as long as yours is okay with yours that should be all that matters. Just eat healthy, and make sure you are getting the right kind of nutrition, and I say let that be that. We have enough to worry about during this time without comparing ourselves to others, and what is average.

I gained a lot and it didn't seem to matter if I was sick and barely able to eat or feeling good and eating healthy foods. It was very frustrating. And it still hasn't all come off. :crying:

@meredithNYC: I gained 50-55 with my DD. I am so hoping not to gain as much this time around, but I'm already up 10-12 at 17 weeks (better than last time, but more than I'd hoped). I am going to start counting calories to see if that helps. I know last time a ton of it was fluid. I lost 30 lbs in the first week or two and all but 10 after 2 months. The final 10 I did not lose until 11 months pp when I stopped breastfeeding. I did eventually make it below my pre-prefnancy weight. So that makes me think that the fluid part might be out of my hands, but should also come off easily.

I was up 60 when I delivered E and I did Crossfit and ate healthy. Soooo much was water weight. I only had about 10 pounds to lose when it was all said and done, and I had to work that off the old fashioned way

My dr said anything between 20 and 60 is what she considers acceptable, because she has patients who gain 50-60 and lose it with each pregnancy

Honestly, I've gained 20 at 20 weeks and if I was just putting fat on, my face would show it...so my body packs it on, too. BUT I know I have better diet and exercise habits than most people so I am confident it will come off :) hard to keep the faith sometimes!

@JessKas: same for me too! I gained 60 lbs (starting at 120) but it was mostly water weight and most came off quickly and the last little bit not until we weaned. I think sometimes your body just does what it needs to do.

@gilmoregirl: @MrsBucky: I do think there is some truth to the body doing what it needs during pregnancy.

@JessKas: totally hoping for the same and that the healthy habits will pay off eventually.

I ate really healthy and exercised after the first trimester and still gained 60 pounds. I even gained 15 pounds in the first tri even though I was throwing up every day and barely eating. I guess it was just what my body was going to do. It came off relatively easily though, which I attribute to the healthy habits I maintained.

Last pregnancy I got both the "you're gaining too much" (2nd tri) and the "you're not gaining enough" (3rd tri) speeches from my doctor even though my diet and exercise was consistent. I think your body is going to do what it needs to do. You may just be gaining earlier than before but won't put on as much later.

I honestly feel like if you are being reasonable (things in moderation, trying to stay reasonably active) then your body will do what it needs/wants and that's 100% ok. Try to be mindful of being moderate, but mostly be kind to yourself! Growing a person is hard work!!

I gained just as much while eating well and exercising as I did when I ate nothing but crap. It was so frustrating to feel like it was out of my control, but nothing made a difference. Once I accepted that my body was going to do what it needed to do, I was a little happier (still spooked by the numbers though, honestly, and I gained about 50 lbs overall).

I had a ton of fluid, a slightly larger (8.5 lb) baby, and apparently a giant placenta (like, all the medical folks were checking it out and remarking on it. I didn't look myself, because ew). So I do think the weight was baby-related and out of my control. It's easier to be zen about it now that my baby's 8.5 months old and the weight's come off.

@miramira: I think that's definitely possible - given that I lost probably 30 of the 50 pounds last time within a few days. One of my strongest birth memories is being aware of the insane and totally crazy amount of fluid that came out.

@cheesehead: I had morning sickness pretty bad, too, but I am a comfort eater and just carb-loaded like nobody's business.

@sarac: I have thought about it and that might just be the way to go. I mean, even if a lot of it is fluid, it's still a good habit to be watching portion-size and calories, etc. It can only make the transition to post-baby weight loss a little easier.

Have you tried calorie counting? I know that sounds daunting, but it's a great way to try to keep to an ideal gain. I went into pregnancy having been dieting, so I just changed my calorie count to 2000 and kept at it. I know how easy it is to exercise and eat well, but just a little too much.

@meredithNYC: I'm the same way!! I try to eat healthy and be as active as I can....but I think it's just the way it is. I gained 40ish with LO1, and am up 33lbs at 35 weeks with LO2. It's not like I WANT to gain a ton! And the sad part is that with both pregnancies I had morning sickness really badly for the first 16-20wks, so I hardly gained anything until the second half. :crying:

Is the weight definitely fat rather than baby/placenta/amniotic fluid? I probably gained a crapload but it was mostly those things. We aren't required to keep track of our weight hete in the uk though.

I am 23 weeks and already like, 25 pounds up. I gained 50 pounds with my first and told myself I would not do that again and so have been trying pretty hard to keep things under control. However, it doesn't really seem to be having much of an effect. Trying not to let it get to me, but man - it's disappointing!
