@oliviaoblivia: my husband is Brian, the guy next door is Brian and the other side next door neighbors have a son named Brian :P

We like the "popular" names because our rules are
-Easy to say
-Easy to read
-Common spelling
-Common name

A lot of the "off the charts" names are too unique for us, even if they're spelled normally.

I'm against top 100 because I'm scorned by having a trendy 80s girl name and always multiple people in classes with same name :)

That said, my #1 girl pick is currently top ten but has family meaning that trumps popularity for me.

Having one of the most common names of my generation means that any name in the top 10 is super unappealing to me, even though years ago they may have been some of my favorite names.

@jedeve: our son is Charles and we call him Charlie. It's DH name so we obviously would love it even if it weren't as popular. This time, we are trying to chose a name that isn't trendy and not something any of our friends already have It's tough!

It doesn't really bother me. I knew when we chose LOs name (Harper), that it was "popular/trendy," but even with it being up there on the charts, in the entire year, there were only 200-some babies named that in our entire state.

I think some names seem trendy to me because I've been inline and stuff looking/searching them out, but for the vast majority of people, they've never really heard of them before.

Not in the sense that I want to be different or original, but I would just hate for Sadie to always be "Sadie T." in school. I grew up with like five Katie's in every class. Sadie & Silas are both moving up in popularity, but I don't care much since I don't personally know anyone else with those names.

I prefer classic names and many of them are ranked very high. My son's name has been very popular in France for the last several years (and not at all in the US), but it is super classic.

I had it in my head that I didn't want a top 100 name--but my husband doesn't care AT ALL. I honestly think I got on that bandwagon because it seemed like the cool thing to do. Ha! Now that I'm pregnant, we're realizing that pretty much every name we like is quite popular right now (we like really classic, sometimes old-fashioned names--think Olivia, Amelia, William, etc) and so we're just going to go with it.

Some family members recently told us it's so much more important to go with a name you really love--and I'm trying to latch on to that and roll with it. :)

To me there is a difference between popular and trendy. Popular to me are names that have always been around and continue to be used often. These are names like Katherine, Elizabeth, Michael, Charles. These names absolutely do not bother me. They're great, timeless names that are popular for a reason.

Trendy names to me are names that are just hot for a moment in time, maybe a year or so and then fade out. I also notice a trend of them being used a lot by younger mothers. Right now it's names like Aiden, Mia, Harper, Jayden, etc. These names start to bug me just based on their over-use, although as stand alone names in a vacuum, they're totally fine names.

I love classic names, not trendy names. It seems, however, that classic names are making a huge resurgence and have become ultra popular. Not gonna lie, it hurts my heart a little when I see newborns with names I wanted to use... but they're classic for a reason! I wouldn't not choose a name I LOVED just because it was in the top 20 or something.

It doesn't bother me a bit. We choose an extremely common name for DD, but yet neither of us have any friends or relatives with her name. We used the classic spelling for her name, which is uncommon where we live. What bothers me more are the various regional or countrywide pronunciations of certain names. That's the reaso why I tried to avoid certain names that are pronounced harshly (where we live).

I don't mind popular classic names at all, for example I really like Noah for a boy and that was #1 last year but I'd still consider it! But, I don't want to use a name that other people we know have or have used for their children-- it's kind of superstitious for me, it's bad luck to name a child after someone living in Jewish/Ashkenazi culture. So, I love the name Benjamin and would totally use it without hesitation but one of our closest friends is a Ben. So, we will most likely choose a not very popular name again for the next baby

I don't mind popular names. My name was #2 for the year I was born, DD1 and DD2's names are both top 10 and we're ok with that. As others have said, it's different now than it was 30 years ago. E and C may have one other person in their class with their name, but I doubt they'll be one of five E or Cs in their class.

If you read up on name popularity whats number 1 today just doesnt have the sheer numbers as the number 1 name did 30+ years ago. I feel like a lot of the super popular names for boys are classic rather than trendy and the opposite for girls. We wanted a less popular name for our daughter but were ok with naming our son William nn Liam because it was in honor of a family member, even though its super popular.

I didn't want top ten bc I didn't want her to always have to be Emily H or whatever. Dh and I both have popular names for our birth year, and his in particular is one of those names where you just go by your last name bc there are so many others. But beyond that I wasn't too fussed about it. C's name usin the lower 100s on the ssa list which was a happy spot or us- but like @jedeve: in kind if surprised it isn't more popular bc it's such a pretty name (I think!).
